Our Mission
Animal Lifeline of Iowa is dedicated to reducing the number of special needs cats and dogs facing euthanasia by providing them with compassionate care, temporary shelter, and the support they need to thrive. Our vision is to ensure that no special needs animal is ever left behind simply for requiring extra love and medical attention.
Our Story
Founded in 1986, we have proudly served the Des Moines area and the entire state of Iowa for over 30 years as a no-kill animal shelter. We focus our efforts on those who need us most: animals that are injured, handicapped, abused, pregnant or nursing, or orphaned infants requiring bottle-feeding.
How We Help
As a 100% privately funded, no-kill organization, we rehabilitate animals that face a higher risk of euthanasia in traditional shelter settings. Every animal in our care receives complete veterinary support from VCA Avondale Animal Hospitals, including spay/neuter services, vaccinations, and essential medical treatment. We manage our intakes based on available resources and capacity to ensure every resident receives the focused care they deserve.

7/3 - Mending Moxie's heart: Five-month-old puppy is recovering after specialized surgery
A five-month-old rescue puppy named Moxie is recovering from a five-hour surgery to address congenital heart defects and is already showing some signs of success.
9/14 - MOXIE MONDAY! Look at our Moxie now! 🥹 Thanks to your support for her heart surgery, this little girl got the chance to grow up...and she’s grown into one pretty amazing pup!! Now she’s ready for the next chapter: finding her forever family. ❤️ Moxie is still waiting for someone to choose her.
