At the Animal Rescue League of Iowa, our mission is to protect the welfare of animals, preserve the human-animal bond, and prevent the overpopulation of companion animals. We believe that every pet deserves a safe place to begin their journey toward a loving forever home.
Founded in 1926, the ARL has grown into Iowa's largest nonprofit animal shelter, serving thousands of pets each year. As a 501(c)(3) organization, we depend on the support of our community to provide life-saving care to animals in need across the state.
Our dedicated team—supported by hundreds of volunteers—manages multiple facilities to ensure every animal receives individualized attention. We do not euthanize for space and place no time limits on the animals in our care, often utilizing foster homes to provide a comfortable environment for pets as they wait to find their soulmates.
Adopting from the ARL is a joyful partnership that changes the life of a pet and yours, too. Our process is designed to ensure a thoughtful match, and our staff is here to provide you with ongoing support, including training advice and resources, to help your new family member settle in comfortably.
We invite you to browse our currently available pets on our website or through the ARL of IA app. Whether you visit us at one of our locations or join our volunteer program, there are so many ways to help us continue this work. Come meet your new best friend today!
