At the Poweshiek Animal League Shelter (PALS), our mission is to provide dedicated care, shelter, and permanent placement for companion animals while promoting humane treatment and responsible pet ownership in our community. Every day, we are committed to changing lives by serving as a safe haven for cats and dogs in need.
Our Story and Purpose
Established in 2004 as a foster network and opening our licensed shelter in 2007, PALS was created to provide a compassionate alternative for homeless animals in Poweshiek County. Since our founding, we have proudly helped over 3,000 animals find loving, permanent homes. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, we operate entirely on private donations, receiving no public funding to support our daily efforts.
How We Provide Care
Located on seven acres south of Grinnell, our facility provides a nurturing environment where our cats and dogs receive comprehensive medical attention, including spay/neuter services, vaccinations, and essential wellness checks. We believe in being a voice for those who cannot speak for themselves, ensuring every animal receives professional care 365 days a year. Because we are a no-kill shelter, we provide a stable, life-saving environment while our animals wait to meet their new families.
