The Humane Society of North Iowa is dedicated to providing temporary shelter, food, medical attention, and comfort to displaced and neglected companion animals while educating our community on humane care and reducing overpopulation.
Founded in 1959 by Mason City resident Alice Anne Blackmore, our organization began as a humble rescue effort on her farm. Over 65 years, we have grown from those early roots into a state-of-the-art facility, completing our current shelter in 2009 to better serve our beloved animal friends.
We are proud to operate as a no-kill shelter, ensuring that no animal is ever euthanized simply due to a lack of space or the duration of their stay. Our 6,600-square-foot facility offers a safe, comfortable environment where animals receive the medical care and socialization they need while they wait to find their forever homes.
We believe every animal deserves a loving, permanent home, and we take great care to ensure each adoption is the right fit for both the pet and the family. Rather than operating on a first-come, first-served basis, we review all applications to thoughtfully match each animal’s unique needs with the ideal home environment.
Are you ready to meet your new best friend? We invite you to browse our current list of adoptable pets online or visit us at our Mason City shelter to experience the joy of adoption firsthand. By choosing to adopt, you aren't just gaining a companion—you are saving two lives by opening up kennel space for another animal in need.
