Our Mission

Safe Haven of Iowa County is dedicated to rescuing, protecting, and rehabilitating cats and dogs while finding them loving, forever homes. We strive to improve the lives of both pets and humans through public education and community-focused spay and neuter programs.

Our History

Our journey transformed in 2012 when the former Krauss Furniture building was generously gifted to us by the family of Virginia Marie Hoppe. By breathing new life into this space, we created a sanctuary for abandoned and lost pets in need of a second chance. It remains our greatest joy to witness these animals find the loving families they deserve.

Our Approach

Operating as a facility-based shelter in South Amana, we provide a safe, nurturing environment where our residents receive dedicated care from our volunteers and staff. While we operate primarily out of our shelter to keep animals visible to potential adopters, we also look to foster caregivers for animals with specific special needs. We believe in working together as a family to ensure every pet receives the highest level of support during their stay with us.

Our goal is to create successful, lasting matches, and we take great pride in the many heartwarming adoption stories we have helped foster. 11/3 - This sweet 9 week old kitten named Walcott will be coming into the shelter from his foster home tomorrow (Wednesday) for his big day with the vet (neuter appointment!) ….. that is the good news….. sadly, all 6 of his littermates have families waiting for them already, leaving Walcott behind 💔 Somehow this adorable tabby boy is still available…. leaving us all scratching our heads! Walcott is such a perfect little kitten - loving, playful, curious, and of course entertaining! We just know his family is out there ….looking for a kitten with a story, and this little fella sure has that going for him! 10/30 - Why watch almost 2 minutes of Reese Whiskerspoon playing ball? Because she’s really skilled! She grasps the concept and is focused on returning the ball. 😻 Being an only kitten is lonely so she these enjoys interactive games. Treatment for ringworm is 6 weeks + waiting for lab results after completing it. She begins her last week of oral medication today so she is in the home stretch! 10/23 - 🎉This week we are celebrating Everett’s 93rd birthday - how’s that for a PAWSitively awesome reason to celebrate Everett?! 🥳 He spent the morning playing, cuddling, and sharing treats with our two new shelter favorites - Jack and Hunter!
