Since 1912, the Humane Society of Greater Kansas City has been dedicated to saving and improving the lives of dogs and cats through preventative medical care, spay/neuter services, education, and adoptions. We are proud to serve as Kansas City's first and longest-standing no-kill shelter, working every day to create a brighter future for the pets and people in our community.

10/13 - Count Catula came to our animal shelter over the weekend after being left here, and when we walked into the cat adoption room today, he was doing everything he could to get our attention. So we opened his kennel and gave him a little break. He was hesitant at first, but once he had a chance to explore and we pulled out a feather toy, this guy completely came alive. Kennel breaks and cat enrichment might seem like small things, but they can make a real difference for shelter cats. Getting out of their kennel gives them a chance to stretch, explore, play, interact with people and just do normal cat things during what can be a stressful time. Count Catula is still on stray hold, so what we can do for him today was to could give him a little space, a little playtime and a few minutes to just be a cat. #ShelterCats #CatEnrichment #AnimalShelter #ShelterEnrichment #CatsOfInstagram

10/7 - Just 65 seconds of Emmy getting to play and forget about her kennel for a little bit. If you’ve been following Emmy’s story, we have some pretty exciting news: Emmy has officially been adopted! But we wanted to share this because these little breaks are such a big deal for shelter dogs. Getting outside gives dogs a chance to stretch their legs, get some energy out, and most importantly, just be a dog for a while. Emmy definitely knew how to make the most of her breaks. Now her breaks from the kennel are permanent, because this girl is HOME. Happy tails, Emmy. 10/1 - A lot can happen in two months. Throughout August and September, our Paws & Purpose Campaign has been about one thing: making sure HSGKC can continue being here for the pets and people of Greater Kansas City. Because of your support, we’ve watched Slinky go from an underweight kitten to a beloved family member. We watched Rocky regain his strength and find a home. Acorn found her family. Deuce and Koda were reunited with theirs. Our team spayed or neutered and vaccinated 70 community cats during a TNR clinic. And those are just a few of the stories from the past two months. 9/26 - Acorn can be heard loud and clear throughout the shelter. She was found by two members of the community stuck high up in a tree, and based on what we know about Acorn now, we’re guessing they probably heard her before they ever saw her. Possibly from several blocks away. Acorn isn’t quite ready for adoption yet, so for now, we’ll continue enjoying the song of her people echoing through the shelter. 9/21 - Charlie is currently the only adult cat in our shelter, so naturally… we’ve moved on to motivational speeches. Maybe you need to crank that Soulja Boy.
