Melissa's Menagerie's Second Chances
Our Mission
Melissa's Second Chances is a 501(c)3 non-profit animal rescue in Shawnee, KS, dedicated to finding safe refuge and loving homes for animals in need. We believe every pet deserves a second chance to be a beloved family member.
Our Story
Our journey began on January 1, 2019, when we rescued our first animal, a dog named George Jetson. Since that day, we have worked tirelessly to grow our impact, helping hundreds of dogs, cats, and small mammals transition from uncertain beginnings into their forever homes.
How We Help
We are a foster-based rescue, meaning we rely on a dedicated network of volunteers to provide a home environment where our animals can thrive while they wait for their perfect match. In addition to our foster network, we operate a shelter facility in Shawnee and partner with the Second Cup Cat Café to give our adoptable cats even more visibility and social interaction.
Your Partner in Adoption
We are committed to thoughtful, successful placements, which is why we guide every potential adopter through a structured process including applications and meet-and-greets. Our team is here to support you in finding a great match for your lifestyle, ensuring that both you and your new companion are set up for a lifetime of happiness.

10/6 - Have you met Tonka yet? Well, let me introduce you! Tonka is a 4 year old good boy who comes from one of those backgrounds that you don’t really want to think about but it is the reality for many animals unfortunately. Tonka spent the first 4 years of his life tied to a pole in a gravel backyard. Not knowing the luxuries of cuddles, blankets, or beds. His owner recently surrendered him and he ended up at @melssecondchances in Shawnee, KS where he has started to bloom but still needs his forever home. His personality is shinning. He is gentle, loves to lean against you, ride in the car, run through the fields, sniff all the things he’s never experienced, ohhhhh and he LOOOOVVVVEEESSSSS the air conditioning, like obsessed with it to the point it’s comical. Tonka is heart-worm + and requires medication for it, but this is not a reason to look past him. This tiny soldier has so much love to give for someone who never experienced it. If you want to FETCH Tonka, please contact @melssecondchances —— 🐾 ♥️ —— #getfetchd #adopt #pitty #rescuedog #kansascity

9/20 - I’ve lost count at all the ways Wild Wolf has made a difference in the lives of our shelter dogs. We love you SO much, @wildwolfdogchews ! 🥹❤️ Thank you for always spoiling the pups at @melssecondchances ! And PS… this wasn’t even all of their goodies. 😂 Two bags didn’t even survive long enough for me to film them because the shelter pups got to them first! You guys are truly the best, and your heart for rescue dogs means everything to us. 🐾❤️ AND while I have your attention… TONKA NEEDS A FOSTER OR FOSTER-TO-ADOPT HOME!!! 🚨 Tonka is a 4-year-old, 40-lb pocket pittie who is heartworm positive and needs a loving home where he can start his treatment. This little social butterfly LOVES people, LOVES other dogs, and is just waiting for someone to give him his chance. 🥹 Check out more videos and information about this sweet boy on @wearefetchd !! 🏡 Foster or foster-to-adopt Tonka: mscrescue.org/adopt 📍 Kansas City Metro
