At Always & Furever Midwest Animal Sanctuary, we wake up every day with a single goal: to ensure that every animal we rescue experiences kindness, dignity, and a life touched by love. We believe that it is never too late for a happily ever after.

We founded our sanctuary to provide a safe haven for the abused, sick, senior, and abandoned animals who often have nowhere else to turn. We refuse to look away from animals in need, regardless of their medical condition, age, or past trauma, because we believe every life is priceless.

Our work is rooted in a unique philosophy that prioritizes animal welfare above all else. We are a no-kill sanctuary operating entirely on donations, which allows us to provide the highest level of care without the barrier of adoption fees. We don’t just offer a place to sleep; we provide the patience, medical rehabilitation, and time needed for each soul to heal and learn to trust again.

10/14 - So you want to start an animal rescue? We’ve talked about your 501(c)(3), but what about state, county and city requirements? Day 10 is figuring out which licenses, registrations or exemptions apply. Let’s walk through it together. First, write down your exact location and activities. Will animals live in foster homes or at a facility? Will you request donations, hold events, sell merchandise or hire employees? Those details matter. Find your state’s charity registration office, often within the Attorney General or Secretary of State. Ask whether you must register before requesting donations, whether an exemption applies and whether claiming it requires paperwork. Tell them if IRS approval is pending. Contact your city or county licensing office. Give them your address and explain your plans. Ask about business licenses, local permits and nonprofit exemptions. Outside city limits? Start with the county and confirm who handles your address. Check with your state revenue department. Selling shirts or other items? Ask about sales tax. Ask whether exemption on purchases needs a separate application. Hiring staff? Check payroll registration requirements too. Keep zoning and your animal license on the checklist. Federal tax exemption doesn’t automatically cover these other requirements. You can email instead of calling: “I’m starting an animal rescue at [address], and we plan to [activities]. What licenses or registrations do we need, what exemptions might apply, and what must we complete before starting?” Save written answers, request official links and calendar renewals. Don’t assume “nonprofit” means exempt from everything. Confirm the rules where you operate. If you want, AI can help find official pages or organize your questions. Remember, it’s just a tool. Sleepy faces, wagging tails, friends waking up together and everyone hearing, “Good morning, I love you.” And meet sweet Coraline, who joined us today! Yesterday, she was scheduled to be euthanized at a high kill shelter. And now look at her. Safe, loved and already learning what peace feels like. 10/12 - Tiger Lilly is taking her afternoon break at the Little Wichita Barn biscuit factory. 🍪🐾 If she's not chasing a puffball across the room, you’ll often find this curious girl sunbathing by the window and taking in the sights while she waits for her furever person to come through our doors. And we don’t take scenes like this for granted. Not every shelter cat gets to spend their wait stretched out in the sunshine, feeling safe, comfortable, and completely at ease.
