Capital Area Animal Welfare Society (CAAWS)
Our Mission
The Capital Area Animal Welfare Society (CAAWS) is dedicated to improving the well-being of animals in the Baton Rouge community. We strive to provide a brighter future for our homeless pets while educating the public on responsible, humane ownership.
Our History
Founded in 1979, CAAWS is the oldest non-profit organization in the Greater Baton Rouge area committed to animal welfare. Established to fill a critical need in our community, we have spent over 40 years as a leader in the humane movement, evolving into a dedicated no-kill shelter that serves the community with passion and purpose.
Our Approach
We are a 100 percent volunteer-operated organization that relies on the generous support of our community to function. Our Baton Rouge-based shelter provides a warm, safe environment for dogs and cats, ensuring each animal receives the care they need, including vaccinations, microchipping, and spay/neuter services, while they wait for their forever homes.
Your Partner in Adoption
Adopting an animal from CAAWS is a meaningful journey that brings joy and fulfillment to both the pet and the person. Our adoption committee is committed to ensuring every animal finds the right, secure, and loving home through a thoughtful matching process. We believe that when you adopt, you are not just getting a companion; you are changing a life and making room for another animal in need.
