The Humane Society of Washington County exists to promote the welfare of companion and domestic animals through educational initiatives, fostering, and enriching adoptions. We strive to be the area’s leading resource for animal-related issues, advocating for compassionate, responsible relationships between people and their pets.
Our journey began in 1921 when Ms. Daisy Derby Whipple founded our organization with just twelve animals in a one-room building. Over the past century, we have grown into a modern facility in Hagerstown, now featuring a dedicated Adoption Center and Veterinary Center to better serve our community.
We provide a safe haven for animals through our shelter facility while utilizing a dedicated network of foster families to help pets thrive in home environments. Our team manages a wide range of services, including veterinary care, spay/neuter programs, and behavioral enrichment, all designed to prepare our animals for their future families. By integrating these resources, we provide professional, compassionate care for every animal that comes through our doors.
We believe in the power of thoughtful matching to create lifelong bonds between pets and their new companions. Our adoption counselors work closely with you to understand your lifestyle and preferences, ensuring a partnership that is a perfect fit for both you and your new pet. Because we prioritize the best interest of the animals, we take the time to answer questions about their history and needs, helping you make an informed and confident decision.
Whether you are ready to open your heart to a new companion or looking to support our mission through volunteering, we invite you to be part of our story. Visit our Adoption Gallery online or stop by our Hagerstown location to meet your new best friend. Together, we can continue to enhance and protect the lives of animals in our community.
