Founded in 1899 by Anna Harris Smith, our organization began with a simple yet powerful vision: that the teaching of thoughtful kindness changes families, communities, and a nation. Over the past 125 years, we have grown from a local rescue to a leader in animal welfare, helping millions of animals by addressing the root causes of the issues they face.
Care Beyond the Shelter
At our Brewster location, as well as our other centers, we provide more than just traditional housing. Every animal receives extraordinary veterinary care and participates in our unique Shelter Behavior and Enrichment program, ensuring their mental and emotional well-being is prioritized alongside their physical health.
