The Animal Rescue League of Boston (ARL) is an unwavering champion for animals in need, committed to keeping them safe and healthy in homes. We believe that pets are family, and we work every day to ensure that animals and the people who love them can thrive together.
Founded in 1899 by Anna Harris Smith, ARL has spent over 125 years teaching the value of thoughtful kindness. From our origins as a sanctuary for Boston's working horses and stray animals, we have grown into a multi-site organization dedicated to addressing the root causes of animal suffering and neglect.
We provide high-quality, direct animal care that meets the highest standards in animal welfare at our centers in Boston, Dedham, and Brewster. Beyond our shelters, we meet people where they are, bringing veterinary and wellness services—such as the Spay Waggin’ and Wellness Waggin’—directly into the community to keep pets happy and healthy in their own homes.
Choosing a new family member is a joyful experience, and we are here to help you find the perfect match. With animals of all breeds, ages, and temperaments in our care, we focus on thoughtful, personalized support to ensure a lasting bond between you and your new companion. When you adopt from ARL, you are becoming part of a community that values compassion above all else.
