Berkshire Humane Society is a private, nonprofit, open-admission animal shelter dedicated to the compassionate care, treatment, and placement of companion animals. We exist to ensure every animal finds a loving home while promoting animal welfare through education and community outreach.

Founded in 1992, we have proudly served as an essential resource for animals and people across the Berkshires. We are a locally funded, independent organization that relies on the generosity of our supporters to continue our vital work without any public funding.
How We Care
Our shelter operates from a state-of-the-art facility in Pittsfield, serving as an open-admission safe haven for over a thousand animals each year. We take in animals regardless of age, breed, or temperament, and we are proud to successfully rehome 100 percent of our healthy, adoptable companions. Through initiatives like our Purradise feline center and our dedicated foster programs, we provide every animal with the specific care and support they need while they wait for their forever families.

10/22 - 'Love Is Blind: Boston' Cast Members Kick Off Fee-Free Shelter Dog Adoption Event
The MSPCA said five coalition shelter members will offer fee-free adoptions this weekend to clear room for new rescues.
9/15 - Letter: Berkshire Humane Society hosting animal welfare workshop
To the editor: Several times a year, Berkshire Humane Society receives calls from Berkshire County residents concerned about the welfare of a neighborhood dog, cat, horse or other animal.
8/25 - Pittsfield: Clear the Shelters campaign waives adoption fees
Berkshire Humane Society will waive adoption fees for adult dogs and cats Aug. 27-30 as part of the Clear The Shelters campaign. Adoptions are subject to application approval.

Pittsfield Police Department's Animal Control unit is on the lookout for Yoda, an orange/green iguana that's between 3 1/2 and 4 feet long.
6/18 - MSPCA kicks off summer with adoptathon for certain dogs
The Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and two other shelters will be waiving adoption fees for certain dogs this weekend.
6/12 - Pet Supply Drive to Benefit the Berkshire Humane Society
The Pet Supply Drive to benefit BHS is happening throughout June.

10/15 - Time is ticking to get your 'Choose Your Subaru' Raffle tickets! Mercedes of @haddadsubaru highlights the current 2026 models on the Subaru lot- just think, the 2027 models are going to be even more stellar, if that's even possible! 10/13 - #HappyTail Tuesday Need a warm, fuzzy feeling after a long weekend? Check out this video Jennie sent us of her new kitten she adopted from Berkshire Humane Society. Indie came to us from our all-volunteer Commmunity Cat Program, who trapped her and her brothers Pretzel and Twister. Jennie says, "When we adopted Cyclone, now Indie, she was very shy and skittish. She is now comfortable in her new home with us. She loves to play during the day and curl up and cuddle so close. She is the biggest snuggle bug. We love her so much. Thank you! 10/8 - For weeks the City of Pittsfield has been held in the throes of an evil stuffed animal, McStuff. McStuff has terrorized the city, refusing to be cute and cuddly, menacing residents with blood-curdling sqeaks, and knocking down blocks of buildings with a single wicked swipe. Fortunately, Pittsfield Police Department knows who to calll -- Muneca, the Berkshire Humane Society shelter dog! Muneca saves the day, four-pawedly apprehending the culprit to save the city.
