PAWS (Protection of Animals in Wakefield Society, Inc.) is dedicated to promoting and protecting the rights and well-being of domestic animals and wildlife. We are an all-volunteer, 501(c)(3) non-profit organization committed to fostering a greater understanding of animal welfare through education and direct support.
Founded in 1982 by the late activist and humanitarian Esther Nowell, PAWS grew out of Wakefield’s Canine Control Committee. For over four decades, our community-driven organization has evolved to address the needs of animals across the Greater Boston area, primarily serving Wakefield, Lynnfield, Reading, North Reading, and Stoneham.
We believe that every animal deserves a safe, nurturing start to their new life. Because we are a foster-based rescue, our cats live in the homes of our dedicated volunteer network rather than a traditional shelter, allowing them to receive individualized love, socialization, and medical care in a stable environment. We partner with local veterinarians to ensure each cat is spayed or neutered, microchipped, and fully prepared for their future home.
We take great care in matching our foster cats with the right families to ensure a smooth, joyful transition for everyone involved. By prioritizing the emotional well-being of our rescues and understanding the unique needs of our adopters, we foster successful, lifelong partnerships. Whether you are looking for a playful kitten or a relaxed senior, your new family member is waiting to meet you.
Ready to meet your match or support our lifesaving work? We invite you to browse our available cats, join us at one of our Saturday Meet and Greet events, or explore our volunteer and foster opportunities. Together, we can ensure that every feline finds the loving forever home they deserve.
