The Humane Society of Genesee County is dedicated to providing shelter and adoption services for companion animals, preventing cruelty, and extending humane education to our community. We are committed to treating every animal and person with dignity and respect while we work toward finding permanent, loving homes for every pet in our care.
Tracing our roots back to 1926, our organization began with the vision of Jonathon E. Burroughs and his colleagues who sought to provide care for homeless animals. For nearly a century, we have grown from a volunteer-run shelter to our current modern facility in Burton, Michigan, where we continue to carry that original vision forward.
We are a private, non-profit organization that receives no federal or state funding, relying on the support of our community to maintain our operations. Our knowledgeable and experienced staff provides care for our animals 365 days a year within our shelter facility. From the moment an animal arrives, we ensure they are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped so they are ready for their new journey.
Adoption is the heart of what we do, and we believe in making thoughtful connections between people and pets. Whether you are looking for a dog, a cat, or a small animal, our process is designed to ensure a successful match for both your family and the pet. We encourage potential adopters to take their time, research their preferred breed, and visit with us to find the perfect addition to their home.
We invite you to browse our available animals online or visit our facility on Dort Highway to meet your future companion. If you are interested in making a difference, please consider supporting our shelter through a donation, volunteering, or by attending one of our signature community events. We look forward to helping you find your new best friend.
