At Wishbone Pet Rescue Alliance, our mission is to alleviate the pain and suffering of homeless pets by providing essential shelter and veterinary care. We are dedicated to securing permanent, loving homes for animals in need throughout Allegan County and West Michigan.

Our Story of Hope

Our journey began in 2008 following the courageous recovery of a black lab named Chance, whose story ignited a movement to protect and care for vulnerable animals. Since then, we have grown into a dedicated organization committed to providing safety and alternatives for abused and abandoned pets, ensuring that every animal receives the compassionate support they deserve.

How We Help

We operate through a collaborative model that includes managing the Allegan County Animal Shelter and running the Wishbone House in Douglas. Wishbone House serves as our rescue headquarters, a supportive adoption site with cage-free cat rooms, and a thrift store that funds our vital programs. By combining shelter operations with community-based fostering, we provide a safe, nurturing environment for thousands of animals each year.

He’s a calm, quiet guy who already knows "sit," "shake," and "down." He walks well on a leash and rides well in the car. He loves playing with toys, especially chasing tennis balls and wrestling with rope tugs. Jersey gets along well with other dogs and would make a wonderful addition to almost any dog-friendly home! 10/2 - ❓IS HELP ON THE WAY❓155 days is far too long. Zig Zag is calling time-out on shelter life—he needs a break from the noise, stress, and confinement. Staff are worried about how the shelter environment is affecting him, and he’s eager for a quiet space to relax and reset. Let’s get Zig Zag out of the shelter! But outside of the shelter, Zig Zag is affectionate, friendly, playful, sweet, and fun-loving. He’s curious and loves to explore, sniff, and investigate during walks. Squeaker toys and tug ropes seem to be favorites, and he’s content to play with them alone. He comes on strong with other dogs, and may be limited to who he gets along well with. With his excitement for life, his leash manners could use some work. But he seems food motivated and highly trainable and has already mastered sit, shake, and lay down. We need to find one person to step up to help this cute boy catch a break, will it be you? 9/29 - 🔆TAIL WAGGING TUESDAY🔆 Dug is deeply sweet and affectionate—he loves nothing more than giving kisses and finding his way right into your lap for snuggles. He becomes so infatuated with his favorite handler that he’s practically attached at the hip (and sometimes gets right underfoot)! While he’s still working on his leash manners and can be a bit fearful in new environments, Dug is eager to build his confidence with a gentle guide. Luckily, he is young and very food-motivated, making him primed to learn all sorts of new things with positive training. Dug will need to be the only dog in his home so he can soak up all the attention, but in return, he’ll be your most loyal, loving companion! 9/26 - 👑PET OF THE WEEK👑 "Chew-bacca," "Chew Baby," "Chugga Chew-Chew"—it’s easy to shower Chewy with endearing nicknames because he is just that sweet and affectionate! This handsome boy instantly brightens any room with his joyful expression, happy attitude, and uniquely sturdy build (he definitely grew a bit more "long" than "up"!). To top it all off, he happens to give the absolute best kisses.💋 🩵His favorite thing is going for walks where he can explore and sniff to his heart's content. He is very food-motivated, already knows "sit," and loves a good food puzzle to keep his brain busy. Chewy is so ready to fill your life with cuddles and scenic walks. He's currently the longest resident at the shelter with 331 long days and nights spent waiting. Will you be the one to finally give him a chance? 9/25 - ‼️Can you help Tontu break out of the shelter❓ Literally! He’s a sweet, gentle soul, but shelter life is wearing on him, leaving him feeling stressed and down. Tontu would love nothing more than to see an application with his name on it! Even if you can’t adopt, please share this post—it might just reach the family he’s waiting for. 🩵Anyone who knows Tontu will tell you what a joy it has been to watch him transform from a terrified pup into a warm, welcoming companion. While he might be a little shy when meeting someone new, Tontu quickly warms up and shows his affectionate, playful side. 💙His favorite pastime is playing with his beloved Jolly Ball, and while he gets a little eager on the leash at first, he settles down into an enjoyable walk. Tontu is great with kids and genuinely loves being around other dogs, making him a wonderful family candidate. A secure yard is recommended so he can safely play and continue building his confidence.
