The Copper Country Humane Society is dedicated to providing professional, compassionate care for domestic dogs and cats, serving the Keweenaw, Houghton, and Baraga Counties and the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community. We are a non-profit organization committed to operating a no time limits shelter where every animal in our care receives the time and attention they need to find their perfect match.
Founded in 1974, our organization has evolved from a small foster network into the vital community resource we are today. By combining resources with the Keweenaw Animal Alliance in 1994, we strengthened our ability to serve local animals in need. In 2005, we opened our current state-of-the-art facility, which features spacious kennels and welcoming play areas designed to enhance the well-being of the approximately 900 animals we care for annually.
We operate a physical shelter facility in Houghton where dedicated staff and volunteers provide quality care to about 80 animals each day. Because we receive no state or national funding, our work is made possible entirely through the generosity of our community members and successful fundraising events. From medical needs and spay/neuter services to enrichment, we ensure every animal is prepared for their next chapter.
Adoption is a joyful partnership, and our team is committed to matching homeless animals with the responsible, loving families they deserve. Every animal we host is provided with vaccinations, microchipping, and sterilization, ensuring they head home as healthy and happy companions. We believe that when you adopt from us, both you and the animal win.
Are you ready to meet your new best friend? We invite you to explore our current list of adoptable pets on our website and sign up for an appointment to visit us at our Houghton shelter. Whether you are looking to adopt, volunteer, or simply learn more, we would love to connect with you.
