Our Mission
At Mackenzie’s Animal Sanctuary, we are dedicated to placing homeless dogs into loving, lifelong homes through compassionate care and thoughtful support. As Michigan’s largest no-kill facility, we provide a safe, nurturing 'home along the way' for every dog in our care.
Our History and Community
Founded in 1999 by the Azzar family in memory of their beloved dog, Mackenzie, our sanctuary continues her legacy by offering a second chance to abused, abandoned, and neglected dogs. We operate independently, relying entirely on the generosity of private donors and our dedicated community to sustain our mission.
Our Care Model
We pride ourselves on maintaining the highest standards of animal welfare, featuring an on-site veterinary clinic, a K-9 gym, and specialized physical rehabilitation. Our comprehensive enrichment program ensures that every dog thrives mentally and emotionally during their stay, whether they are with us for weeks, months, or years.

Petunia would like everyone to know that she regrets absolutely nothing, though she is currently VERY stinky. 💀 Rest in peace, little stinker. You may be gone, but you will most certainly not be forgotten. Especially not by anyone within a 20-foot radius of Petunia. 😭🦨

9/20 - 🌎 LOOK WHERE LIFE HAS TAKEN JASPER! ❤️ Jasper was adopted from Mackenzie’s back in 2022, and we recently received the most incredible update from his mom. Jasper has adjusted beautifully and has been adding countries to his passport! He has now visited Denmark, Germany, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Italy, France, Luxembourg, and Norway. And his mom put it perfectly: “It is so special and heartwarming to be able to give him the opportunity to explore the world with me.” ❤️ We couldn't agree more. There is something so incredibly special about seeing a dog who once needed a home now getting to experience the world with the person he gets to call his own. Thank you for sharing your adventures with us, Jasper! We absolutely love seeing where life has taken you, and we can't wait to see where that passport takes you next. 🐾✈️
