Capital Area Humane Society

Our Mission

Our mission is to promote the humane treatment of companion animals through protection, placement, education, and example. We envision a community that deeply values the human-animal bond and where all animals are healthy and safe.

Our History

Our journey began in 1935 when local animal advocates started caring for homeless pets in their own homes and private spaces. Formally founded in 1936, we have spent decades evolving to meet the needs of our community, growing into the independent, local, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization we are today.

How We Help

We believe every animal deserves care, which is why our shelter does not place time limits on the animals in our care; they remain with us until they find their forever families. We are proud to operate a dedicated shelter and an on-site public Spay & Neuter Clinic, ensuring that our pets receive the medical attention they need to thrive. Our compassionate staff and dedicated volunteers work tirelessly every day to ensure our animal residents are healthy, safe, and ready for their next chapter.

The Adopter Connection

Adopting a pet is a joyful partnership, and our Adoption Counselors are here to guide you toward a lifelong, successful match. We take the time to get to know both you and our animals to ensure that the pet you choose is the perfect fit for your lifestyle and home. By choosing to adopt, you are not just getting a new best friend—you are making a meaningful difference in the life of a companion animal.

Find Your New Friend

We invite you to visit our shelter in Lansing to meet the many animals waiting for their new families. Whether you are ready to adopt, volunteer, or support our mission, your involvement helps us continue this vital work. Visit our website or stop by the shelter today to find your new best friend!

10/14 - WHY NOT ME WEDNESDAY?!? Sponsored by Meridian Heating and Cooling Meet Roxs, a good boy who deserves a loving place to call home. At 10 years old, Roxs is a sweet, social guy who still has plenty of love to give. He does have some health challenges, including a persistent cough, and may have a shorter lifespan. Right now, he’s still enjoying his days, eating well, and finding joy in the little things. We’re looking for a special person who understands the realities of senior-dog care and is willing to give Roxs a soft place to land, knowing that time together may be shorter than we wish. Sometimes, the greatest gift we can give a senior dog isn’t more time, it’s making the time they have left feel safe, comfortable, and full of love. Could you be that home for Roxs? #BeTheirHope #BeTheirHome #AdoptLansing #savinglivesfor90years

She’s looking for a patient family who will let her blossom at her own pace. Agnes is nervous around other dogs, so any introductions should be slow and thoughtful. 10/2 - What's one of the added perks about fostering neonates or pregnant cats? Naming the kittens! While a lot of animals come into the shelter with names, our smallest friends often come in nameless so it's up to the foster to get to know them and decide a title that's fitting of their personality. This foster pooled name suggestions from friends and let the kitten choose himself! Jet isn't quite ready for adoption, but once he gets a little bit bigger we'll get him neutered, microchipped, and up on the adoption floor. Interested in becoming a foster home? Fill out an application on our website, adoptlansing.org, or email our foster team at Foster@AdoptLansing.org today! #FosterFriday #AdoptMyFoster #AdoptLansing

9/30 - They’re still waiting. And after more than 45 days at the shelter, we’re hoping someone will finally see them. Imagine spending more than six weeks in the same place, watching other animals leave with their families while you wait for your turn. Our long-term kitties may be safe, fed and cared for, but they are still waiting for the one thing they want most: a place to call home. They’re waiting for someone to notice the little things that make them special. The purrs. The head bumps. The quiet companionship. The silly personalities. The unconditional love. They’re waiting for someone to say, “I choose you.” And now, there’s an extra reason to come meet them. The kitties in the video (Echo, Tuna, Galaxy, and Grizzly) have fee-waived adoptions. That’s right, $0 to bring home a companion who has been waiting weeks for someone to choose them. More than 45 days is a long time to wait for a family. Could you be the person who ends the wait? Come meet our long-term kitties. Your new best friend may be waiting quietly for you. Be their hope. Be their home. #AdoptLansing #BeTheirHope #BeTheirHome

9/28 - For Honey, hope is someone who will be patient, earn her trust, and show her that she is safe. Honey is a sweet, sensitive young dog with so much love and potential to give. She can be shy with new people, but with patience, encouragement, and time to feel safe, she has the potential to truly blossom. Honey has lived with older children and enjoyed their company, but babies and toddlers make her nervous, so she would do best with older children. She has also lived with another dog and enjoyed playing with a neighbor’s dog, so she may enjoy a canine companion with a slow, thoughtful introduction. A calm, loving home, positive training, and plenty of enrichment will help Honey build confidence and feel secure. Busy environments may be overwhelming for her, and her family will need to supervise her closely in the yard while she settles in. Honey may need a little extra time to open her heart, but the family willing to give her that chance will discover just how special she truly is. Be Honey’s hope. Be Honey's home. #AdoptLansing #BeTheirHope #BeTheirHome
