Our mission is to help companion animals live happy and healthy lives in loving homes while creating a compassionate community where pets and people thrive together.
Established in 1972 as the Muskegon Humane Society, we have evolved from a grassroots volunteer group into a comprehensive animal welfare organization. Today, we operate as Big Lake Humane Society, reflecting our deepened commitment to keeping families together through accessible care, training, and support.
We are a private, limited-admission shelter dedicated to providing a comfortable, enriched environment for the animals in our care. Our ten-acre property features walking trails and agility areas, ensuring our residents stay physically and mentally active while waiting for their perfect match. Additionally, our nonprofit community animal clinic allows us to offer essential wellness care and spay/neuter services to the broader public.
We believe that every adoption is a partnership built on trust, which is why we take the time to learn the specific needs and personalities of each animal. By focusing on thoughtful, personalized matching rather than a first-come, first-served process, we ensure that every pet finds their ideal environment for a forever home. When you adopt, you aren't just gaining a companion; you are making space for another animal in need to receive the care they deserve.
Whether you are looking to find your next best friend or want to support our ongoing efforts, there are many ways to get involved. Please visit our adoptable pets page to meet our current residents, or reach out to learn more about volunteering, fostering, or donating to our life-saving programs. We look forward to connecting with you and welcoming you into our community.
