The Borderland Humane Society is dedicated to providing safe shelter for companion animals in transition while promoting responsible pet ownership to improve the quality of life for both animals and our community.
Incorporated in 1973 in International Falls, Minnesota, we have spent decades serving the animals and people of Koochiching County. From our early roots in community education to our current operations, we have grown into a collaborative organization committed to rescue, fostering, and re-homing.
We believe in the highest standards of care and have formally adopted the Association of Shelter Veterinarians’ Guidelines for Standards of Care in Animal Shelters. Our dedicated team operates a modern holding facility, opened in 2015, where we prioritize the five freedoms for every animal, ensuring they are provided with comfort, proper nutrition, and the ability to express their natural behaviors while awaiting their forever homes.
Adoption is a serious and rewarding responsibility, and we strive to place every animal in the most suitable home possible. We take great care to ensure a thoughtful match, and our team is always here to answer questions throughout the process. When you adopt from us, you are not just getting a pet; you are joining a network of compassionate neighbors working together to make our county a safer, kinder place for cats and dogs.
Are you ready to meet your new best friend? We invite you to view our current adoptable animals on our website or visit us during our public hours to learn more. Whether you are looking to adopt, volunteer your time, or support our mission through donations, we would love to connect with you.
