Ruff Start Rescue
A Passion for Saving Lives
Ruff Start Rescue is dedicated to saving the lives of animals in need by improving animal welfare in our communities through adoption, education, and by providing essential resources for people and pets.
Our History and Heart
Founded in 2010 after an encounter with an abandoned dog named Hope, our organization has grown into a powerful force for animal advocacy. We are driven by a simple, unwavering vision: a world where every companion animal has a safe, loving forever home.
Our Foster-Based Commitment
We believe that a home environment is the best place for an animal to thrive while waiting for their forever family. Because we are a 100% foster-based organization, our rescues live in volunteer homes rather than a traditional shelter setting, ensuring each pet receives individualized attention and love.
The Joy of Adoption
When you choose to adopt from us, you aren't just gaining a companion—you are becoming a hero in a life-changing partnership. We work closely with our adopters to understand their unique dynamics, ensuring that every match is as rewarding for the pet as it is for the family. Our team is committed to transparency and support, keeping your new family member healthy and happy with comprehensive veterinary care before they even arrive at your door.
Join Our Mission
Your journey to finding a new family member begins here. We invite you to explore our list of available animals or reach out to us to learn more about our foster and volunteer programs. Together, we can continue to create heartwarming success stories one adoption at a time.

10/17 - Sable deserves a soft place to land. 💚 This sweet, laid-back 5-year-old girl was found wandering around an apartment complex and is now waiting at a local impound. Despite being on her own, she’s remained gentle and trusting, with striking green eyes and a calm personality that makes her easy to love. Recently, unexplained wounds have appeared on Sable’s face, along with a spot on her back right leg that she’s been licking. We don’t know what’s causing them, and she may need additional testing and treatment. Sable is urgent and needs a foster home to join Ruff Start Rescue. She deserves a quiet place to decompress, someone to look out for her, and the medical care she needs. She’s been through enough on her own. Now, she needs a safe place to rest and begin healing. 10/17 - All it took was one person to change Delaney’s world. For 58 days, Delaney waited behind kennel bars for her chance. Last night, a foster stepped up, and she finally got to leave the shelter behind. To every foster who opens their home, makes room for one more, or helps an animal through a difficult chapter, you’re changing lives in ways you may never fully realize. You’re giving animals a place to decompress, feel safe, and discover what it means to be part of a home. Hundreds of animals need that same chance. They need a safe place to land and someone willing to help them take the next step. We need more fosters to help animals join Ruff Start Rescue, find safety and comfort, and get the fresh start they deserve. You could be the person who changes everything for the next animal. 💙

10/15 - We celebrated a major milestone at Ruff Start Rescue with a ribbon-cutting for our new 2,920-square-foot expansion! The @elkriverareachamber joined Ruff Start staff and board members to mark this exciting step forward for our organization and the animals who depend on us. This expansion means more room to provide care, support our community, and plan for the future. Three new cat rooms with natural light and outdoor-access catios will help reduce stress and improve care for cats. Additional veterinary exam and recovery space will create more room to treat animals, while repurposing existing rooms into dedicated surgery suites will help us increase spay and neuter capacity and work toward preventing unwanted litters. The expansion also includes a comfort room for heartworm-positive dogs and transported pets, along with new education and volunteer spaces to better support the people who make our work possible. We’re grateful to the generous donors who made this project possible and to everyone who continues to support Ruff Start Rescue. Your support helps us grow our ability to care for animals and strengthen our mission of connecting people and pets. This is more than additional space. It’s an investment in the future of animal welfare and the lives we’ll be able to change for years to come.

10/8 - Delaney really needs someone in her corner. She has been at a local shelter for 51 days and is now considered urgent. This approximately 3-year-old Pit Bull mix was found as a stray wearing a collar with a broken-off tie-out. Sadly, nobody came looking for her. When Delaney first arrived, she was scared and unsure of the people around her. She can still be timid in new situations, but with patience and a little space, she warms up, and her sweet, playful personality starts to shine. She did very well during her dog test, too, showing off a loose, wiggly, playful side. Delaney needs a quiet foster home where she can decompress and continue building confidence at her own pace. Slow, appropriate introductions should be used with resident dogs, and her behavior around cats is currently unknown. She’s been waiting a long time. Now she needs a foster to help her take the next step. Interested in fostering Delaney? Sign up to foster at the link in our bio. Questions? Email foster@ruffstartrescue.org.

9/30 - Tank Sinatra has been waiting at a local impound for 37 days, and we’re hoping his next chapter can start with a foster home. 💙 This 6-year-old Lab mix is a happy, playful guy who loves tennis balls, toys, and attention. He’s done well meeting other dogs and is ready for a change of scenery. Fostering gives dogs like Tank a chance to decompress, get comfortable, and experience life outside of a kennel while they wait for their next step. Sign up to foster at the link in our bio. She’d much rather be out exploring, meeting people, and enjoying some freedom. Duchess needs a foster home and rescue partner to help her get out of the kennel and take her next steps. 9/25 - As we put the finishing touches on our expansion, something pretty exciting is happening: our feline friends are officially moving into their brand-new cat spaces! 🐱 Adoptable Ziggy is making history as the very first resident of the expansion! These new spaces give us more room to care for cats in rescue, create dedicated areas for them to relax and decompress, and ultimately help us serve more animals and the people who care for them. What started as an empty space is becoming a place that will directly support lifesaving work for years to come. And this is just the beginning of what this expansion will make possible. It was extra special to celebrate 33,000+ lives saved while surrounded by so many of the people who make that lifesaving possible.

9/23 - 77 days. Lady Barkington is still waiting. 💔 This playful, chatty girl has spent more than two months in a local impound, and she’s now considered URGENT. We really need to find her a foster home. Lady has plenty of personality and would love a canine buddy who’s ready to play. Most of all, she needs someone willing to open their home and give her a chance to finally leave the kennel behind. Can you be Lady’s foster? Sign up at the link in our bio.
