At the Brookhaven Animal Rescue League (BARL), our mission is to humanely care for shelter animals while promoting responsible pet ownership and protecting the special bond between humans and animals. We are dedicated to building a kinder community, one adoption at a time.
Founded in 1981, BARL began as an all-volunteer organization committed to the well-being of animals in the Brookhaven area. Since achieving 501(c)3 status in 1982, we have expanded our reach to serve Lincoln, Franklin, and Copiah counties, evolving into a professional operation that provides a safe haven for hundreds of dogs and cats every year.
We believe in providing the best possible care for our residents, which is why we maintain a high standard of professional management and facility excellence. In 2025, we upgraded our cat facilities to include modern, comfortable enclosures and a sun-filled porch to ensure the contentment of our feline friends. While we rely on a dedicated staff for daily operations, our volunteers remain the heartbeat of our success in managing our facility and facilitating adoptions.
Adoption is a joyful partnership, and we are here to help you find your perfect new best friend. Whether you are interested in a dog or a cat, our transparent, professional process ensures that every animal receives the vetting, vaccinations, and spay/neuter services they need before joining your family. We are proud of our high charity ratings and remain committed to the health and happiness of every pet in our care.
We invite you to visit our Adoption Center in Brookhaven to meet our current residents and see our mission in action. You can also explore our available pets online, support our ongoing efforts through our Home to Home program, or consider fostering and volunteering to make a lasting difference. Together, we can continue to create bright futures for homeless animals.
