At the Bitter Root Humane Association, our mission is to build a compassionate community where pets and people thrive. We are dedicated to providing a safe, welcoming space where every animal in our care receives the love and support they need while waiting for their perfect forever home.
Our History and Commitment
Founded in 1972 by a group of local animal lovers, we have proudly served as the only animal shelter in the Bitterroot Valley for over five decades. While our original building served our community for 35 years, we were thrilled to open our new, state-of-the-art facility in July 2021 to better meet the needs of our guests. We are a private non-profit that relies entirely on the generosity of our community, ensuring every animal gets the time and care they deserve.

Our modern facility is more than just a shelter; it is a bridge to a better life for homeless pets. Our compassionate and knowledgeable staff—supported by a dedicated volunteer team—provide daily socialization, medical care, and specialized attention to ensure our animals are ready for their next chapter. 6/4 - Animal shelters' capacity still stretched after Bitterroot animal neglect case
Weeks after a major neglect bust led to nearly 90 animals being confiscated, shelters are still at capacity, impacting hours and staffing.
11/4 - What an incredible event at the fairgrounds supporting the Bitterroot Humane Society, the only animal shelter serving the Bitterroot Valley since 1972. Ember/Grano and all of our team were very grateful to be part of it. Also Autumn is one of the best planners I’ve had the pleasure of working with: super organized and an absolute joy to work alongside. The work Bitterroot Humane Society does for animals who can’t help themselves is truly amazing. We’re always happy to support them, and it’s a blessing to see our community come together for such an important cause. ❤️🐾

10/26 - 🐕🐈⬛🐾 The Howling was this past weekend, to benefit @bitterroothumane. What a labor of love from a ton of volunteers who just love animals & support this cause. It was a howling success and I keep hearing a buzz about the layout & setup I dreamed up 🥰🥳. And it feels like the entire Bitterroot Community donated… donated prizes, materials for me to build cool things, desserts, and so much more. What an event to wrap up my client events for the year!
