Animal Orphanage (AO) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit animal shelter dedicated to providing safe shelter, compassionate care, and a pathway to permanent homes for stray, lost, and unwanted animals. Every day, we work to save lives and connect animals with the families that are right for them.
Serving Southern New Jersey Since 1988
Since our inception in 1988, we have saved over 44,000 animal lives. As an open-intake municipal shelter, we proudly serve 26 municipalities across Southern New Jersey, offering a beacon of hope for animals in need regardless of their breed, age, or medical condition.

Beyond our municipal responsibilities, we partner with local, regional, and national rescue organizations to help animals from overcrowded facilities find new opportunities. Through responsible practices and a dedicated team, we are proud to have achieved a 93.03% live release rate in 2025.

5/13 - Broomall Dog Rescue: 44 Dogs Saved From Deplorable Conditions
A Broomall dog rescue pulled 44 dogs including newborn puppies from deplorable conditions. Criminal charges filed, all animals now in BVSPCA care.
10/19 - Mindy is one of the sweetest cats you will meet. This 1 year old black beauty came to us with her kitty housemate Buddy when their owners sadly lost their home. Buddy has since been adopted and now it's Mindy's turn to find a family. Mindy doesn't ask for much and spends her days snoozing on her big, soft blanket. When we open her cage to say hello, she climbs right into our arms and won't stop purring. If you'd like to give this lovable little girl a chance at a new life, please stop by the Animal Orphanage soon and ask to meet sweet Mindy. ❤

10/17 - Looking for the perfect pup to add to your family? Look no further than Candy Apple! This 9-month old puppy is as sweet as her name. Candy Apple came into @animalorphanage as a stray, and surprisingly no one came into claim this lovely lady. Candy Apple is dog and kid friendly, walks great on a leash, knows sit and is super smart and anxious to please. She was a total rock star while we were taping Rescue Me in the @fox29philly studio. Candy Apple is part Husky and has lots of puppy energy, so she would thrive in an active family to teach her the ropes and take her for long walks.
