Our Mission
Española Humane is dedicated to improving the lives of animals in underserved communities by going where the need is greatest. We believe in providing veterinary care without barriers to keep families and their pets together.
Why We Do It
We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit serving Rio Arriba County, Española, and the surrounding Pueblos. By providing free spay/neuter services and affordable care, we aim to build stronger, healthier communities where pets thrive alongside their humans.
How We Help
As an open-door shelter, we welcome every animal in need, from dogs and cats to pocket pets like rabbits and ferrets. Our work is supported by an incredible network of foster families who provide love and transition support, alongside our dedicated shelter team. Through high-impact programs like our animal clinic and community-focused initiatives, we work daily to provide the medical care and resources every animal deserves.

Española Humane makes bringing a furry friend into the family easy this summer with reduced adoption fees on puppies and kittens and fee-waived adoptions on all adult pets. 10/27 - 🍰 Shortcake is serving up sweetness with a side of squishy, smooshy love! This 2-year-old chonk is getting ready to be paw-roled November 17 from our Paws in the Pen program at the Penitentiary of New Mexico, and she is the whole dessert menu. She loves stopping to smell the flowers, splashing in the pool, and playing with her pals. And her fakes? Let’s just say she’s got better moves than some famous basketball players. Over eight weeks, Shortcake and her incarcerated trainer have been baking up a whole lot of good manners, confidence, and life skills. She’ll graduate potty trained, crate trained, and ready for home! But Shortcake’s biggest superpower is her enormous sugar-sweet heart. There’s a whole lot of love packed into every roll, and she’s ready to share every last crumb with a family of her own. 10/26 - Vinny is a professional people lover, aspiring couch potato, and spectacularly terrible treat catcher. 😂 Before Vinny ever made it to Española Humane, there were already concerns about neglect. Then his people moved away and left him behind in the home. For days, he waited for people who weren’t coming back. And somehow, this sweet 2.5yo 54lb love muffin still thinks humans are the greatest thing on earth. Not just some humans. Not just the ones he knows. EVERYBODY. Every new friend is a potential soulmate, every hello is cause for celebration, and every available lap is an invitation. 🥹 Now Vinny is getting his second chance through our Paws in the Pen program, working with his incarcerated trainers to learn the skills he’ll need to shine in his next home. He graduates and gets paw-roled November 17! 🎓🐾 His dreams include a soft couch, people to love, and a family who always comes back. Catching treats is not his calling, but being someone’s whole world is where he really shines. Vinny has spent enough time being left behind.
