Animal Protective Foundation

Our Mission

At the Animal Protective Foundation (APF), our mission is simple: to protect, care for, and connect companion animals with the loving homes they deserve. We are dedicated to ensuring that every animal in our community has the opportunity to live a happy, healthy, and fulfilling life.

A Legacy of Compassion

Since 1931, we have served as a pillar of support for pets and the people who love them in the Capital Region. Over the past 90 years, we have grown from a small shelter into a comprehensive resource, providing veterinary care, adoption services, and community outreach to approximately 5,000 animals each year.

How We Help

As an open-admission shelter, we provide a safe haven for animals in need regardless of their breed, age, or condition. Our dedicated team works tirelessly to meet every pet's physical, emotional, and medical needs, ensuring they are nurtured and prepared for their next chapter. We believe that by fostering a secure, compassionate environment, we can provide every animal with a true second chance.

Your Adoption Journey

We understand that finding the right companion is a big decision, and our adoption counselors are here to help you make a perfect match. By getting to know your unique lifestyle and preferences, we strive to create lasting, joyful bonds between pets and their new families. We encourage all members of your household to be part of the process so that every adoption is a success story.

Take the Next Step

Are you ready to meet your new best friend? We invite you to explore our available dogs, cats, and small animals to see who might be the purr-fect addition to your home. Please visit us at our Glenville location during our shelter hours, or reach out to our team to learn more about how you can make a difference in the life of a shelter pet today.

10/8 - 💜 The faces behind the compassion. The hearts behind the care. It’s Animal Welfare & Customer Service Appreciation Week, and we’re celebrating two incredible teams who make a difference every single day at the Animal Protective Foundation! From our Animal and Client Care Specialists (ACCS), who provide love, comfort, and care to the animals who need us most, to our Front Desk team on both the Shelter and Clinic Sides who welcome our community with kindness and compassion, these are the people who make APF so special. Their work isn’t always easy, but their dedication never goes unnoticed. Every wagging tail, every happy adoption, and every second chance is made possible by people like them. To our ACCS and Front Desk teams: We see you, we appreciate you, and we are so lucky to have you! 💜🐾 Help us show these amazing people some love in the comments!

9/22 - Meet Cookie! Cookie was able to go on her first outing yesterday and THRIVED! Cookie came to APF as a stray so her new friends here are still learning about her. She loves squeaky stuffy toys- but only if they haven't been used by anyone else. She walks well on leash and gets excited when she sees her harness. Cookie is still working on her confidence in new unfamiliar situations, but responds well to verbal praise and a high value treat. If interested in meeting her and learning more, visit APF Tuesday- Saturday 12 - 4:15PM.

9/15 - They’ve waited long enough. 💜 Trio. Mozzy. Finnie. Three incredible dogs. Three very different personalities. And three members of our Lonely Hearts Club who desperately need one thing: a home. Shelter life was never meant to be long-term. These three have watched other dogs come and go while they continue waiting for someone to finally choose them. They deserve cozy beds, favorite spots on the couch, walks with their people, and a life beyond the shelter walls. To help them get there, Trio, Mozzy and Finnie each have a reduced adoption fee of just $75. If you’ve been thinking about adopting, please consider giving one of our longest-waiting dogs a chance. Sometimes the pet who has been overlooked the longest is the one who just needs the right person to walk through the door. Come meet Trio, Mozzy and Finnie at APF, Tuesday–Saturday from 12–4:15 p.m. Please share. Their people might be one share away. 💜 https://www.animalprotective.org/adopt-a-dog
