Carteret County Humane Society

Our Mission

The Carteret County Humane Society is dedicated to protecting, sheltering, and promoting the adoption of homeless animals while reducing pet overpopulation through spay and neuter programs. Our vision is that every shelter animal receives a true chance at the life they deserve.

Why We Serve

As a 501(c)(3) organization, we work diligently to provide a safety net for animals in our community. We are committed to caring for every resident in our shelter until they can be adopted into a loving home, ensuring each animal receives the medical attention and support they need to thrive.

Our Care Model

Our facility in Newport serves as a vital hub for animal welfare, where our staff and volunteers provide a clean, safe, and nurturing environment for our residents. We also rely on a wonderful network of foster caregivers who offer temporary, loving homes for pets, helping them gain confidence and social skills as they await their forever families.

Your Adoption Journey

Adopting a rescue pet is a fulfilling experience that creates a lasting, joyful partnership. Our team is here to guide you through a thoughtful process—including family meet-and-greets—to ensure you find a companion whose personality and needs perfectly match your lifestyle and home.

Join Our Community

Whether you are looking to find your new best friend or want to get involved, we invite you to visit our shelter on Hibbs Road or explore our available animals online. Together, we can provide these deserving animals with the second chances they need to live happy, healthy lives.

10/9 - They may not know your name, but they know you came back. ❤️ Sometimes, all it takes is showing up. Help us remind them what it feels like to be loved, wanted, and remembered. Take the first step. Sign up to volunteer. Because 147 pictures later, your camera roll will be fuller, your heart will feel bigger, and you’ll leave knowing you made a difference. 10/3 - 🐾Strays. Owner surrenders. Protective custody holds. No matter what situation leaves a pet without a family, we take them in. Shelters across the country are struggling to find safe places for dogs like Lacy to stay. Places where they can feel loved, be fed, receive the care they need, and simply remain safe. Be apart of the solution, not the problem. Spay and neuter. Advocate. Educate. Adopt. Foster. Donate. Share. Every action matters. So that dogs like Lacy aren’t left behind. Animal welfare takes teamwork. It takes compassion, responsibility, and commitment from all of us. It starts within our communities, and it needs to end within our communities. Because the responsibility to care for the animals around us belongs to all of us.

9/30 - 🐾Are we around animals too much? Maybe.✨ 🐾Have we started to turn into them? Also maybe… at least for some of us.✨ We asked our shelter staff what a kitten sounds like, and let’s just say… we got some very different answers. 9/26 - ❤️One week ago, we set out with a mission to clear the shelters, and 17 lives were changed that day. We are so incredibly thankful for our staff, volunteers, the Petdocks team, and every adopter who opened their hearts and homes. It truly takes a village to save lives, and we are so touched by what our community was able to come together and accomplish. This is our one-week recap, but also an important reminder: not every baby found their forever home that day. Our work continues. We remain hopeful that each and every one of these sweet babies will find the loving forever home they deserve. Thank you for standing beside us, sharing their stories, opening your homes, and believing in these animals. Together, we can keep saving lives🐾
