Carolina Animal Rescue & Adoption (CARA) is dedicated to rescuing, caring for, and placing companion animals into safe, responsible homes across North Carolina. We work every day to promote responsible pet ownership through humane education and provide compassionate care until every animal finds their perfect match.
Our journey began in 1982 with a small group of friends in Lee County who were determined to solve the local crisis of homeless animals. Following a community-led rebirth in 2003, we reopened our facility on Deep River Road in Sanford as a dedicated no-kill shelter. Today, we continue that legacy, driven by volunteers and donors who believe that every companion animal deserves a second chance.
CARA operates as an independent, volunteer-driven 501(c)(3) nonprofit that relies entirely on community support. Our shelter provides a safe haven for dogs and cats where they receive medical care, vaccinations, microchipping, and spay/neuter services while they await their forever families. Because we are a no-kill organization, we focus on thoughtful, long-term success for every animal in our care.
Adoption is a joyful journey, and we are here to ensure it is a great fit for both you and your new pet. Our team carefully reviews every application to match personalities and lifestyles, creating lasting partnerships that benefit the entire family. We believe that when you adopt, you are not just gaining a companion—you are saving a life and making space for another animal in need.
We invite you to experience the difference a rescue pet can make in your life. Whether you are ready to adopt, interested in volunteering, or want to attend one of our upcoming events, there is a place for you at CARA.
