ASPCA Behavioral Rehabilitation Center

A Legacy of Compassion

The ASPCA is dedicated to being the voice for animals, working to ensure they receive the protection and care they truly deserve. For 160 years, we have been at the forefront of animal rescue, driven by a mission to create a safer, more compassionate world for our furry friends.

Our Roots and Our Mission

Founded in 1866 as the first animal welfare organization in North America, our commitment to animal welfare remains as strong as ever. Today, we tackle complex, modern challenges by driving legislative change and providing vital support to communities, ultimately transforming how society values and cares for animals.

How We Help Animals Thrive

Rather than acting as a single shelter, we serve as a national leader that collaborates with hundreds of local agencies, rescues, and clinics to meet community needs. Our work involves a blend of direct care, such as our state-of-the-art Adoption Center in New York City and foster-based programs in locations like Los Angeles, alongside training and research that support thousands of other organizations across the country.

Your Partner in Adoption

Adopting a pet is a life-changing journey, and our goal is to ensure that every match between a person and a pet is a lasting, joyful one. Our team of experts, including qualified veterinarians and behavior counselors, works carefully to guide you through the process, helping you find the perfect companion to welcome into your home and heart.

Join Our Movement

We invite you to take the next step in making a difference for animals in need. Whether you are ready to meet your new best friend, wish to volunteer your time, or want to learn more about our adoptable animals, we are here to support you. 10/15 - It’s the final month of the ASPCA’s Rescue Effect campaign, and I had the chance to visit the new @aspca Community Veterinary Clinic in Los Angeles. The facility is amazing and I love what they are doing for the Los Angeles community. The cats being moved out of town are all from the ASPCA’s kitten foster program and they are always looking for more foster caregivers. Also if you live within the zip codes of 90059, 90061, 90220, 90221, 90222, 90247, 90248, 90262, 90746 and 90747 and have a total annual income under $50K, you can come by to receive free spay/neuter for your pets. You can learn more and check your eligibility at aspca.org/carson. Also just following their page can help them reach more people to get more animals healthy and adopted. By helping one, you can help many more. That’s The Rescue Effect!

10/11 - The quirkier the pup, the better! One man's soft spot for pups with special needs 🧡 At Evan's house, every dog has a story. His first dog, Luna, arrived as a stray puppy and quickly moved in. Bert came after, recovering from serious injuries when Evan adopted him from a local shelter. It was his soft spot for dogs with special needs that led him to two ASPCA dogs, Gizmo and Eddie. Evan and his wife had been thinking about adopting a small dog when they came across Gizmo on the ASPCA website. The scruffy pup seemed like exactly the kind of laid-back companion they were looking for, and it didn't take long for him to become part of the family. His mitral valve disease, a heart condition that requires daily medication, might have deterred some, but for Evan, it made Gizmo all that much of a perfect match. After Gizmo, Evan wasn't actively looking for another dog until he saw Eddie's adoption profile online. Originally having come to the ASPCA Cruelty Recovery Center in Ohio with 34 other dogs as part of a suspected neglect case, it became clear that Eddie was not only hard of hearing, but also had a malformed and nonvisual eye, which was ultimately removed. Already drawn to overlooked animals, Evan noticed Eddie right away and decided to foster him. After about a week, it was clear that Eddie wasn't going anywhere, and he became the newest member of the pack! When Evan chose to adopt both Gizmo and Eddie, he freed up valuable space and resources at the shelter, giving even more animals a chance at rescue and rehabilitation. That's #TheRescueEffect. 10/10 - ASPCA's Dog of the Year: Canyon! Canyon is our honoree for 2026 Dog of the Year and had a few stops to make before his moment in the spotlight 🌟 First, pampering at @theplazahotel. Then, a visit to the Pulitzer Fountain Promenade and a stroll down @fifthavenue to @lacoste for the finishing touch. From shelter dog to FEMA-certified Human Remains Detection canine, Canyon has supported recovery efforts after the flood near Camp Mystic and the Maui fires. His journey shows the extraordinary difference a second chance can make. All dressed up for the ASPCA Humane Awards Luncheon and a well-deserved honor. #ASPCA #FifthAvenue #LiveLikeThePlaza #ASPCADogOfTheYear

As part of the ASPCA’s Rescue Effect campaign, Nia recently visited the ASPCA Community Veterinary Clinic by Kathy Taggares in Los Angeles, where she met kittens from our foster program and took on “Paws for Thought” with a rapid-fire round of some very important (and fun) questions ahead of her podcasting debut.🎙️ Dogs or cats? Dancing or acting? New York or LA? Nia’s answers might surprise you. ✨ Are you grounded? Let us know if you agree with Nia’s picks in the comments! 10/4 - We're diagnosing you with a severe case of no-tippy-tap-itis! The cure? A daily dose of Higgins! 🩺🐾 Okay, we might not actually be doctors, but what we do know for sure is that life is a lot better with this 2-year-old pup in it. Currently located at the ASPCA Adoption Center in New York City, Higgins is a quintessential social butterfly who wants nothing more than to have his very own adventuring buddy. Higgins approaches every day with the pure joy only a dog can have, and that happiness to live in the moment is truly infectious. I mean, who could look at that adorable face and say no? We mean it when we say a Higgins a day keeps the bad vibes away. You can meet Higgins every day from 12 p.m.- 5 p.m. at our Adoption Center, located at 424 E 92nd St, New York, NY 10128.
