Highland County Humane Society

Our Mission

The Highland Humane Society is dedicated to providing a peaceful, nurturing temporary home for adoptable dogs and cats while working tirelessly to place them in suitable, loving forever homes. We are committed to increasing awareness regarding the humane treatment of animals and promoting spay/neuter programs to reduce overpopulation in our community.

A Legacy of Compassion

Since our founding in 1969, we have served as a vital, community-driven resource for animals in need throughout Highland County. As a private, 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, we rely entirely on the generosity of supporters like you to continue our life-saving work, as we receive no state or county government funding.

How We Help

We provide a safe, compassionate sanctuary for animals transitioning from their past lives to their future forever homes. Our dedicated team of staff and volunteers is committed to supporting both pets and their owners through essential services including low-cost spay/neuter clinics, vaccinations, microchipping, and our pet food pantry. By managing our intake, we ensure every animal in our care receives the dedicated attention and medical treatment they deserve.

The Perfect Match

We believe every dog and cat deserves their perfect match. Rather than applying rigid criteria, we offer a personalized, experienced adoption service where each unique animal and prospective adopter is treated with care. We are committed to fostering deep, lifelong bonds between pets and their new families.

10/5 - Pandora's Box is Full of Love — Now She Just Needs a Family to Share It With! ❤️ Meet Pandora, a sweet and petite 1-year-old pup weighing just 25 pounds. While we've listed her as a possible Pit mix, with her smaller size it's likely she's a blend of several breeds. Whatever her breed mix may be, one thing is certain: she's 100% lovable. Pandora is the kind of dog who wants to be everyone's friend. In fact, she's become our go-to girl when introducing new dogs because she's so welcoming, social, and eager to make canine friends. She approaches life with a happy attitude and a wagging tail, always ready to make a new buddy. As far as we are aware, Pandora does well with people, children, and other dogs. Pandora is young and still needs to be taught rules and boundaries along with having fun and being a youngster. Like any young dog she can get a bit exuberant when playing with children and will need to be taught when and how to calm down. Her friendly personality and manageable size could make her a wonderful addition to many different types of homes. Whether you're looking for a family companion, a walking buddy, or a best friend to curl up on the couch with, Pandora is ready to fill that role. If you've been searching for a smaller dog with a big heart, Pandora may be exactly who you've been waiting for. ✨Adoption Fee - $75 ✨Age - 1 years old ✨Sex - Female ✨Weight - 28lbs ✨Breed - Pit Bull Their adoption fee includes: 🐾 First 2 DAPP vaccines 🐾 Bordetella vaccine 🐾 Flea & tick prevention 🐾 Heartworm prevention 🐾 Dewormer 🐾 Spay/neuter 🐾 Microchip ❤️ OUR ADOPTION PROCESS IS SIMPLE! Come meet the available puppies, find your match, and if everything works for you, take your new family member home the same day! 📍 Temporary Location: 3559 State Route 136 Hillsboro, OH 🕐 Regular Hours: Monday– Friday: 12–5 PM Saturday: 11 AM–3 PM

9/29 - Both of these playful ladies are looking for a home. DON'T PANIC! We aren't asking anyone to take them both, well I mean if you want to we'd let you, but we will be just as thrilled if they each get adopted into their own home. Pandora (white and black) and Imogen (black) are both playful, dog friendly girls. Does this mean they like ALL dogs, nope, who does? Even us dog lovers don't love ALL dogs. However, with the right friend they are goofy and playful and so ready to ditch this place. Are these girls perfect? Do they come without some work on their new family's part? Again the answer is a big fat NOPE! Again, no dog does though, they all just come with different needs. Pandora is essentially a 12 week old dog body snatcher who is trying to leave the shelter through an adult dog's body. Crazy talk right? Pandora is young, playful, still learning on what to chew on and not chew on, and will need some guidance on where the bathroom is in her new home. She's not ready for the responsibility of being left loose alone while you're gone- she'll have a party, I promise you! What she will bring to the family is entertainment, love, goofiness, and some sweet sighs and snuggles at the end of the night. Imogen is the kind of girl who would like to formally request that everyone please calm down. She is much more interested in a quiet life than a busy social calendar, and honestly, we think she may have been born for 2020. Six feet apart? No parties? Staying home? Imogen would have THRIVED. This sweet girl is looking for someone who understands that the “boring” life most people think isn't enough for a dog is actually exactly what Imogen wants. She would LOVE a predictable routine where the days look pretty much the same: breakfast, some relaxing, maybe a walk, some couch time, dinner, and plenty of peace and quiet. No parties, no constant visitors, no hobnobbing with the neighbors — just good old-fashioned time at home with her people. Imogen takes her mother's warning about talking to strangers very seriously. But that doesn't mean she doesn't want a family. She absolutely does. She is looking for her ONE or TWO special people — the ones who understand that a truly great relationship doesn't happen overnight or over one weekend. Both of these girls are fully vetted and ready to go home and their adoption fee is just $75/each. PLEASE come and meet one or both of them anytime during open hours!
