Our Mission
At the Peterborough Humane Society, we are dedicated to being the voice for animals through community outreach, humane education, and adoption. We envision a world where compassion for animals and their well-being is ingrained in the fabric of society.
Our Journey
Since our establishment in 1941, we have grown alongside our community to provide essential care for animals in need. In 2023, we proudly opened the doors to our new, state-of-the-art Peterborough Animal Care Centre, an innovative hub that allows us to serve more pets than ever before.
Our Care Model
As an open-admission, For Life organization, we provide a safe, temporary home for over 1,500 animals annually. Every animal in our care receives comprehensive veterinary attention, including vaccinations, microchipping, and spay/neuter surgery before they are ready for their new home. Our facility also proudly hosts Canada’s first dog rehabilitation centre in partnership with the Ontario SPCA and Humane Society.

10/20 - Say hello to our gal, Porcha. She’s the kind of girl who makes you work for her love, but she is absolutely worth the wait. 🐶❤️ She can be nervous when meeting new people, and she likes to take things at her own pace. She isn’t handing out her heart to just anybody. But once you’ve earned her trust, you’re in. Like, ALL the way in. That’s when the kisses, snuggles, zoomies, and snacks start, and suddenly Porcha is your girl. She’ll follow you around like your little shadow, soak up every bit of love you’ve got, and make you wonder how you ever lived without her. She’s looking for someone patient enough to let her come out of her shell and show them the sweet, silly, affectionate girl hiding underneath. Could that be you? 10/7 - Meet Bertha, or “Big B” if you’re one of the lucky ones who knows her. 🐾 She’s 12 years old, she’s 22 pounds, and she’s a wonderful cat. 🐈⬛ Bertha was adored in her last home (a little too adored when it came to snacks), and she has come to the shelter through no fault of her own. Here’s what you need to know about this gorgeous lady. She wants to be with you. She follows you from room to room, then settles in right on your feet like that’s where she’s always belonged. Bertha would be especially happy with someone who works from home, because she’d gladly keep you company all day. She will need a family who’s ready to help her get to a healthier weight, with measured meals and gentle play. Nothing dramatic, just patience and a little encouragement. She’s a senior gal who deserves to be spoiled, just with a few fewer treats this time around.
