Action Volunteers for Animals (AVA) is a dedicated, 100% volunteer-run charitable rescue committed to improving the lives of stray and feral cats across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area. We believe every cat deserves a safe, loving future and work tirelessly to make those connections happen.
Founded in the early 1970s by animal advocate Merlin Andrew, AVA began when a group of volunteers united to protect vulnerable animals during a local shelter strike. Since becoming a registered charity in 1981, we have remained a small but mighty team, driven by the same spirit of compassion and collective action that first brought us together over fifty years ago.
We operate as a foster-based rescue, which allows our cats to live in caring, temporary homes while they await their forever families. From providing essential veterinary care—including spay/neuter services, vaccinations, and medical treatments—to championing Trap-Neuter-Return-Monitor (TNRM) programs for community cats, we ensure that every animal in our care receives the medical attention and dignity they deserve.
We view adoption as a lifelong partnership, which is why we take great care in matching each cat's unique personality to the right home environment. By taking the time to understand both our rescue cats and your family’s lifestyle, we help create lasting, joyful bonds that benefit both the kitty and their new guardians.
