Action Volunteers for Animals - Durham Region
Our Mission
Action Volunteers for Animals (AVA) is a dedicated, 100% volunteer-run registered charity committed to improving the lives of stray and feral cats across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area. We believe every cat deserves a safe, loving future and are proud to be a driving force in local rescue efforts since the early 1970s.
Our Story
Founded in 1972 by animal welfare advocate Merlin Andrew, AVA began when a group of committed volunteers came together to protect animals in need. Today, we continue her legacy of bravery and dedication by working tirelessly to rescue homeless cats, support community cat colonies, and provide the medical care each animal requires to thrive.
How We Help
We operate as a foster-based rescue, providing a temporary sanctuary for cats in the homes of our compassionate volunteers. Before finding their forever homes, every rescued cat receives essential veterinary care, including vaccinations and spay or neuter surgeries, ensuring they are healthy and ready for their next chapter. By partnering with local adoption centres, we create a network of support that reaches from our foster homes to your living room.
Finding Your Perfect Match
Adoption is a life-long partnership, and we are here to help you find the companion that best suits your home, lifestyle, and family. Whether you are looking for a playful kitten or a calm senior, our thoughtful matching process ensures that both the cat and your family feel truly at home. We take the time to learn each cat’s unique personality so that every placement is a lasting, joyful success.
