Building a Better Community for Pets and People

The mission of the Humane Society of Harrisburg Area is to build a better community for pets and people through compassion, protection, education, and collaboration. We are dedicated to creating a brighter future for the animals who need us most.

Our Commitment to Compassion

Proudly named a No-Kill shelter by Best Friends Animal Society in 2024, we serve the pets and people of Dauphin, Cumberland, and Perry Counties. We are committed to healing animals who can be healed and treating behaviors that can be treated, ensuring that humane euthanasia is only a last resort for those who are too ill or dangerous for rehabilitation.

How We Care for Our Companions

We work tirelessly to enrich the lives of our shelter residents by investing in our facility, which includes recent upgrades like temperature-controlled kennels and three large outdoor play yards for exercise and enrichment. Affiliated with the Brandywine Valley SPCA, we utilize expert resources to provide quality care for homeless, abandoned, and lost pets while acting as a vital support resource for our community.

Finding Your Perfect Match

We practice and promote an open adoption process, which removes rigid barriers in favor of meaningful, open-ended conversations. Our goal is to help you find a great match for your household so you can build a long, happy, and strong bond with your new best friend.

10/12 - 💕 UPDATE 🐾 Baby Reina is home with us now. The sweet senior spent days at an emergency vet before she was cleared to travel. She has now arrived at our West Chester campus where the next leg of her healing journey begins. She was seen by our caring vet, Dr. Moon, who is treating her eye and ear infections, and is continuing her special refeeding plan to help her gain weight at a safe pace. Since we carried her out of a locked metal crate at the Dogtown Ranch property in Texas, Baby Reina has taught us all a lesson in resilience and love. This girl just wants to snuggle, give kisses, and chow down. She still has a long road ahead, and it is not an easy one, especially for a senior dog,  but we will do everything we can to give her the resources she needs to heal and gain her strength. A dedicated and experienced foster is taking her home where we know she will be able to relax and feel safe. Send some love to Baby Reina, we all are. #dogtownranch #bvspca #babyreina

9/25 - "Skip day has literally changed my life. It helps so much on the days that are hard to give a little extra love to little hearts. 💕" -Skip day buddy Kayleigh Shelter Skip Days benefit our dogs and people. Not only are our shelter dogs benefitting from time away from the shelter and exposure to potential adopters who may not notice them in their kennels, field trips give our people participants a rewarding day of doggie cuddles, as well. As school starts and the weather gets colder, we tend to have less people come in to do Skip Days. So now is the time to stop in and make a shelter dog's day! 9/21 - Dirk Verbeuren, drummer for legendary band Megadeth, stopped by the Humane Society of Harrisburg Area as the band performed in Hershey as part of their world tour last week! He asked if he could learn more about what we do and help spread the word about some of our adoptable furry friends. We were honored to meet Dirk, and his passion and love for animals was apparent from the moment he walked through our doors. He even took part in a dog play group and met several adoptable pups that all gravitated to him instantly. We cannot thank Dirk enough for his compassion for animals, and his desire to use his platform to raise awareness for shelters and rescues everywhere. (Pets featured in the video include Parker, Ellen Ripley (adopted!), Lopez (adopted!), Goosebumps, and Zalyus.)
