Pet Refuge is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to providing a loving, true no-kill sanctuary for cats in need throughout Rhode Island. We believe every cat deserves a second chance at a happy life, whether they have been abandoned, surrendered, or need a place to call home.
Our History
Our journey began in 1968 when five concerned residents of Wickford, Rhode Island, established the North Kingstown Animal Protection League. Since purchasing our shelter property on Stony Lane in 2004, we have remained committed to our founding mission of protecting local animals.
How We Provide Care
As a privately funded organization, we rely entirely on the generosity of our supporters to provide medical treatment, nutritious food, and compassionate care to approximately 400 cats annually. Our team works tirelessly to ensure a clean, comfortable shelter environment where cats receive the personalized attention they deserve while awaiting their forever homes.

10/8 - Oh, just look at this handsome boy! 💙 Meet Sketcher, a six-year-old Snowshoe who is hoping that his next home will finally be his forever home. This big, beautiful boy has already lived in a couple of different places, and what he really needs now is someone who will give him the stability, love, and patience he deserves for the rest of his life. ❤️ Sketcher absolutely loves attention and being petted. He’s a wonderful, good boy who enjoys spending time with people and is sure to steal your heart. He doesn’t seem to love being picked up right now, but shelter life can bring out different sides of a cat’s personality, and we always say that once they’re home and comfortable, personalities can change. We’re also still getting to know Sketcher when it comes to other cats. We’re working on seeing whether he enjoys the companionship of friendly felines. Patience and time can do wonderful things, and we want to give Skecher every opportunity to show us who he really is. Meet Mason! 💙 This boy is just wonderful, amazing, stunning—frankly, he’s everything! 😻 Mason is around 4 years old and came to us through no fault of his own. His very loving guardian is moving out of the country, and sadly, Mason wasn’t able to go along. While this is a heartbreaking change for both of them, we are determined to help Mason find the loving forever home he deserves. 10/6 - 🐾 Meet Baby! 🐾 This pretty girl is 4 years old, and she’s ready for her next chapter! Baby is a beautiful medium-sized tabby who didn’t exactly love shelter life when she first arrived. But with a little time, patience, and some moving around, Baby has really turned a corner. ❤️ Now she’s showing us that she truly appreciates attention and would love nothing more than a loving forever home of her very own. 10/6 - Meet Sasha — A Sweetheart Who Just Wants to Be Loved! ❤️ Sasha is a gentle, loving girl who has discovered just how wonderful it can be to feel safe, cherished, and close to her people. She loves being around you, soaking up affection, and sharing the simple moments that make a house feel like home. And when she wants your attention, she has the most adorable way of raising her paw in “begging mode,” hoping for a little love—or maybe a tiny taste of that chicken you just cooked! How could anyone resist that face? Sasha has her own ideas about affection. Being picked up isn’t her thing, and she’s not quite ready to be a lap cat just yet. But don’t let that fool you! She is more than happy to snuggle right beside you on the couch or curl up next to you in bed. She’s even learned that gentle kisses on the top of her head are simply part of being loved, and they’re now a regular part of her day. ❤️ She enjoys playing with her toys for little bursts of fun, but what she really treasures is the comfort of being near someone who loves her. Sasha doesn’t need to be the center of attention or demand constant entertainment. She’s happy just being your girl, sharing your space, keeping you company, and reminding you that some of life’s sweetest moments are the quiet ones spent together. And going outside? No, thank you! 10/2 - 🐾 Meet Percy! 🐾 Just look at that sweet face! This handsome young man is 4 years old, big, strong, and absolutely ready to leave shelter life behind and find a home of his own. ❤️ Percy has spent some time outside, so he’s developed a bit of a tough-guy exterior. But underneath that handsome, strong facade is a boy with plenty of love to give. Once he gets comfortable, we think you’ll discover the sweet soul hiding beneath his rugged exterior. 🥰 Percy would probably love to be the one and only king of his castle. 👑 He may prefer having his humans all to himself, although with time, patience, and the right introduction, we certainly wouldn’t rule out him becoming friends with another friendly feline someday. 10/2 - 🍯 Well, here she is… sweet Honey! 🍯 This girl is really turning a corner, and we couldn’t be happier to see it! Honey was found outside and safely brought to Pet Refuge, and little by little, she has been coming out of her shell. 💕 She is now accepting pets and attention from her human friends, which is a BIG step for this beautiful girl! Honey may not jump right into your lap on day one, but with time, patience, and love, we truly believe she could blossom into an amazing companion. And just look at her… isn’t she absolutely gorgeous?! 😻 We estimate Honey is around 2 years old, spayed, and up to date on her vaccines. One thing we know for sure—Honey LOVES the company of other friendly felines! 🐱 She would do wonderfully in a home with another friendly cat, or she could even be adopted with another kitty from Pet Refuge. This sweet Honey Bee just needs someone willing to let her take things at her own pace. And when she finally decides you’re her person? 10/1 - WOULD YOU JUST LOOK AT THESE TWO GORGEOUS CREATURES?! 💕🐾 Meet Sushi and Luna, two petite, sweet, affectionate 5-year-old ladies who have completely stolen our hearts. Honestly… we are ALL a little bit in love with these girls! 😻😻 These bonded beauties were sadly surrendered when their guardian could no longer care for them. But despite such a big change in their lives, Sushi and Luna have continued to show us just how incredibly special they are. We recently moved them into a common area with other friendly felines, and these two adapted like absolute pros! They are lighthearted, fun, adorable, and wonderfully chatty. They love being part of the action and have settled in beautifully with their new feline friends. 💗 Now, all they need is a family to call their own. Imagine coming home to double the purrs, double the cuddles, double the personality, and DOUBLE THE LOVE. 🥰 Sushi and Luna are the kind of girls who could make a house feel instantly more like home. 9/30 - 💙 MEET SKETCHER! 💙 We know, we know… he’s absolutely stunning and absolutely precious! Just look at this gorgeous, fluffy, VERY large Snowshoe boy! 😻 Sketcher came to Pet Refuge because his guardian could no longer care for him due to housing issues. When he first arrived, he was understandably a little grumpy. We wanted to make sure there wasn’t more going on, so we got him to our veterinarian—and that’s when we discovered a mass on his leg. Of course, we didn’t waste any time. A biopsy confirmed that the mass was a benign tumor, and Sketcher had it promptly removed. 🎉 This handsome boy is just six years old, and he has so much life and love ahead of him. Now, what he needs most is a forever home. We are looking for someone who is ready to make a lifelong commitment to Sketcher, through all the years, all the changes, and all the love that comes with sharing your life with a cat. He deserves nothing less. ❤️ We’re still getting to know Sketcher when it comes to other cats, so that’s something we’re working on.
