Saving Sumter's Strays
Our Mission
Saving Sumter’s Strays is a dedicated volunteer-based organization committed to providing a compassionate safe-haven for dogs and cats in need. We work tirelessly to ensure that every animal in our care receives the medical attention, quality nutrition, and love they deserve while they await their forever families.
Our Story
Founded in 2016 by Nina Stroebel and Lauren Cunningham, our organization grew from a simple desire to help the animals at Sumter Animal Control. What began as a few hours a week walking dogs and cleaning kennels blossomed into a full-scale mission to improve rescue efforts and adoption outcomes for our local community.
How We Help
We serve as a vital bridge between the local open-intake animal control shelter and a happy, healthy future. Our volunteers spend countless hours socializing, transporting, and fostering these precious animals to ensure they are prepared for life in a home. Beyond networking for rescue, we actively manage adoption programs and provide essential medical supplies to enhance the comfort of every pet under our care.
Your Role in a Happy Ending
We believe that every adoption is a labor of love and a partnership built on patience, trust, and commitment. Our adoption coordinator, Judy Burket, works closely with families to find the perfect, lifelong match, ensuring that our animals go to homes where they will thrive. We ask our adopters to provide quality care, including heart-worm prevention, a secure environment, and plenty of affection, so that every pet finds their own happy ending.
