Friends For Life Animal Shelter & Sanctuary

Our Mission

At Friends For Life, we save animals and strengthen our community’s engagement with them. We are here for every animal, regardless of their origin, breed, age, or condition, because we believe every life matters.

Rooted in Our Community

Founded on the belief that no shelter is an island, we have grown right here in Houston to serve our neighbors. We aim for a future where all animals have safe homes and pet owners have the resources they need to care for their cherished companions.

Our Care Model

We believe in thinking outside the shelter. While we operate a facility at 107 E 22nd Street, most of our animals live in loving foster homes, which allows us to provide personalized care and behavior support. By blending community resources, such as our pet food bank, with rescue and rehabilitation, we create a systemic change that keeps families together.

Your Adoption Journey

Adoption is a joyful partnership, and we are dedicated to helping you find the perfect match. Our transparent, evidence-based process includes adoption counseling and a one-week sleepover period to ensure your new best friend is the right fit for your home. We are here to support you with resources for the life of your animal.

10/11 - Our hearts are full after last night’s Through the Looking Glass fundraising gala! We are so grateful to everyone who joined us and made the evening so special. We’ll be sharing more gala highlights and beautiful photos soon, but today we want to introduce you to one of our very special four-legged gala guests. ❤️ Meet Canelo! Canelo was part of an abandoned litter of puppies. Shortly after his rescue, we realized something wasn’t right. He struggled to keep his food down, and diagnostic testing revealed a narrowing in his esophagus, making it extremely difficult for food to reach his stomach. Canelo is alive today thanks to the extraordinary dedication of his foster mom, Dee. After every meal, Dee makes sure Canelo remains upright so gravity can help his food slowly travel down to his stomach. Her patience, love, and unwavering commitment have given this sweet boy a fighting chance. But Canelo deserves more than a lifetime of struggling just to eat. 🥹 There is hope—and a more permanent solution! A specialized surgery, estimated to cost $5,000, could correct the narrowing in Canelo’s esophagus and give him the chance to eat more normally and live a healthier, happier life. Will you help us give Canelo that chance? Every donation, no matter the size, brings us one step closer to giving Canelo the future he deserves. Donate to Canelo’s surgical fund if you’re able.

10/8 - Phoebe got a gift! From Melissa: “Phoebe the cat came to us when her adopter, and only friend, had to go to a memory care center. Phoebe is, behaviorally, our sickest patient. She lives in a room surrounded by cats and she is terrified of them. She is afraid of new people. The report she came in with said that she doesn’t like petting, in fact it didn’t say that she liked many things except for toys. Thanks to Mao (and Heather) Phoebe got an exciting new cat wand today and she had the best out time she’s ever had at FFL! She’s the happiest I’ve ever seen her! I hope getting to play like this helps her feel better about her time at the shelter and enables her to make new friends! Thanks, Mao!” Phoebe is part of our Fraidy Cat program for under-socialized cats. Our team is helping her build confidence and learn to trust. We love seeing her so joyful today. ❤️

9/25 - The weekend is here … slow mornings, nowhere to be, a little extra time to just be together. Fabio would be very good at that part. He’s happiest with someone nearby, soaking up the company and making an ordinary afternoon feel a little cozier. We’d love for Fabio to spend all his weekends with someone of his own. Or, until forever finds him, a foster home would be a lovely place to land. Are you Fabio’s person? Adopt or foster: friends4life.org/fabio

9/25 - Seven Years : Countless Miles : One Incredible Community Last night, we got to celebrate 7 years of TIMELESS Runners, a Houston run club that has spent years showing us just how far a community can go when it moves together. And this year, the celebration came with an INCREDIBLE milestone: September 23 has officially been proclaimed as TIMELESS Run Club Day! TIMELESS has been a longtime supporter of Friends For Life through the Chevron Houston Marathon’s #RunForAReason program, turning miles into meaningful support for the animals in our care. So, of course, we showed up to celebrate them and maybe recruit a few more runners willing to put their miles to work for Friends For Life while we were there. Congratulations to the entire TIMELESS family on seven years of running, growing, giving back, and building community. Here’s to the miles behind you and all the ones still ahead. 💛💜

9/25 - Meet Bunji, a 4-year-old brindle boy with a big personality and an even bigger heart. 🐾 He’s playful, affectionate, great with people and kids, and happiest right by your side. Bunji loves a good adventure, but he’s just as happy settling in for cuddles with his favorite humans. 🏡 Bunji would thrive as the only pet in the home, where he can soak up all the love and attention. He does have some ongoing health needs, including hip dysplasia, arthritis and seasonal allergies, but that hasn’t stopped him from being the happy, lovable boy you see here. ❤️ Through The Pack Cares, we’re partnering with @friends4lifeorg to help local dogs like Bunji get seen, get shared and, most importantly, find loving homes. Could Bunji be the missing piece of yours? 🐶 Adopt Bunji: Visit FriendsForLife.org and search “Bunji.” Not ready to adopt? Share his story. You never know who in your circle might be his person. #ThePackCares #PetAdoption #AdoptBunji #HoustonDogs #HoustonPetAdoption #FriendsForLife

9/22 - 🚨 PET FOOD ALL-CALL 🚨 Houston, we need your help. 🐾💛 Our Pet Food Bank helps keep pets where they belong: at home with the people who love them. Right now, our shelves could use a little love of their own. We’re putting out an ALL-CALL to our #FFLArmy for pet food donations to help us continue supporting families throughout our community. Dog food, cat food... if you’ve got it to give, we’ll gratefully put it to good use. Every bag helps. Every can helps. Every donation helps us say “yes” to another family who needs us. You can drop off donations here at the shelter, or have them delivered to FRIENDS FOR LIFE 107 E. 22nd St, Houston, TX 77008. Please SHARE this post to help us spread the word! Let’s fill these shelves, Houston.
