About Best Friends for Life Established in 2015, Best Friends for Life (BFFL) is dedicated to improving the lives of domestic cats in the Laredo community. Our mission centers around spay and neuter initiatives aimed at reducing the overpopulation of stray cats while also educating the public on animal welfare and the importance of adoption. We envision a future where every cat finds a loving home and enjoys a profound bond with human companions. Our journey began in 2011 when animal advocates Luisa Ortiz and Sandra Solis united to tackle the growing issue of stray cats in Laredo. Understanding the challenges faced by these homeless pets, we provided vital veterinary care, including spay/neuter services, fostering a pathway to a new life. In 2014, Krisa Leon joined our ranks, and together, we officially became a non-profit organization recognized for our proactive approach to cat overpopulation problems. As the first organization in Laredo to implement the Trap, Neuter & Return (TNR) program for community cats, we are proud of our success in curbing the breeding rates among feral cats. Since then, we have placed over 7,702 cats into caring homes. Our commitment to reducing the stray cat population is not just reactive; it's a comprehensive plan that includes community education and partnership with local pet stores to promote adoption and foster programs. With the support of the Laredo Animal Protective Society, we have built Laredo's first Free Roaming Cat Village and successfully amended city ordinances to facilitate effective TNR practices. We aspire for Laredo to become a No-Kill city, setting a commendable example for others to follow.
