Our mission is to break down barriers and build connections for pets and people through supportive services, innovative programs, and thoughtful leadership. We exist to cultivate a humane community that fosters compassion and strengthens the unique human-animal bond.
Serving the Hampton Roads Community
Founded in 1972, the Chesapeake Humane Society is an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. We operate entirely through the generosity of private donors, grants, and program fees, serving the Hampton Roads community with accessible veterinary services and a dedicated adoption program for dogs, cats, and small animals.
How We Care
Our Adoption Center provides a safe, welcoming environment where our cats roam freely, allowing their unique personalities to shine. While many of our adoptable dogs reside in our facility, others receive love and specialized attention in the homes of our dedicated foster volunteers until they are ready to meet you. This blend of shelter and foster care ensures every animal receives the compassionate support they deserve before finding their forever family.

9/16 - Dairy Queen pup cups are back in Hampton Roads to benefit local animal shelters
The fundraiser, which started in 2020, benefits the Chesapeake Humane Society, the Norfolk SPCA, the Peninsula SPCA, and the Virginia Beach SPCA. The money helps provide resources to care for animals waiting for new homes.
