Founded in 1912, the Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society is dedicated to improving and saving the lives of companion animals through compassionate care, community engagement, and education. We envision a safe, healthy, and compassionate community for animals and those who love them.
Our History and Purpose
For over a century, our organization has served as a cornerstone of animal welfare in rural Coastal Virginia. We address the needs of our community by transforming the lives of over 8,000 animals annually through shelter services, affordable spay and neuter programs, and vital resources for pet owners facing hardship.
How We Care for Our Animals
Our work is made possible by a dedicated team of professionals and volunteers who provide daily care at our shelter, which acts as a transition point for pets on their way to new beginnings. We operate the Fixin’ to Save clinic to proactively reduce animal homelessness through affordable surgeries and promote responsible ownership. By focusing on both immediate shelter needs and preventative community services, we aim to break down barriers to care for families and their pets.

10/13 - You guys would NOT believe what happened today! We discovered an alligator in one our of play yards and thank goodness Super-Taz was there to save the day! Phew! That was a close one! 🐾
