The Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society (GMHS) has been a cornerstone of animal welfare since its establishment in 1912. As a nonprofit animal shelter located in rural Coastal Virginia, GMHS is dedicated to transforming the lives of over 8,000 animals each year. Our mission is to improve and save the lives of companion animals through compassionate care, affordable adoption, spay/neuter services, community engagement, and education. At GMHS, we envision a safe, compassionate, and healthy community for all companion animals and their human companions. Our core values are reflected in our impressive annual impact, achieving a 96% live release rate and providing care for more than 1,900 animals, while facilitating over 4,000 spay/neuter procedures. These efforts underscore our commitment to responsible pet ownership and animal welfare in the community. Our diverse programs encompass traditional shelter adoption services, a pet pantry to aid families facing economic hardships, and an array of educational initiatives aimed at fostering compassion and care for animals. We also prioritize accessible spay/neuter clinics that further our mission of controlling the local pet population. The GMHS team is comprised of passionate professionals and volunteers who work collaboratively to provide excellent care and services.
