Welcome to the Animal Aid Society (AAS), a dedicated no-kill dog shelter that has been serving the Coastal Virginia community since 1971. Founded by passionate dog lovers, we are proud to be a 100% volunteer-run organization committed to providing a safe and nurturing environment for dogs in need.
Over the past 50 years, AAS has transformed from a small backyard operation into a robust shelter occupying seven acres with 41 kennels, allowing us to care for a larger number of dogs while providing them with quality veterinary care, nutritious food, playtime, and love. We believe that every dog deserves a forever home, and we work tirelessly to make that happen—ensuring our furry residents feel secure and cared for for as long as it takes.
We partner with other rescue organizations both locally and across Virginia, maximizing our collective efforts to assist animals in need. The heart of our operation relies on the generosity of our community, as we are a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that receives no government funding. Your donations are crucial—they are tax-deductible and help us maintain our shelter as well as provide for the dogs.
At AAS, we embrace an inclusive philosophy. Anyone aged 18 and older, living within a 40-mile radius of our shelter, is welcome to apply to adopt one of our dogs. We are also thrilled to invite volunteers of all ages, from 18 to 84, to join our mission to provide love and care to homeless dogs. There's a role for everyone here at AAS!
We operate our shelter every day of the year, ensuring that our dogs are never hungry or lonely. Our volunteers are on-site daily, caring for our furry friends, and our doors are open to the public from 9 AM to noon. Importantly, AAS is steadfast in our no-kill policy, promising that no animal will be euthanized due to space constraints or length of stay; our commitment to compassionate care guides our decisions regarding euthanasia.
Join us in making a difference in the lives of dogs waiting for their forever homes. Whether through adoption, volunteering, or donation, your support is invaluable to our mission.
