Caring For Creatures

A Legacy of Compassion

Founded in 1988, Caring For Creatures is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit sanctuary dedicated to providing a safe, healing refuge for homeless animals. We believe that each animal in trouble matters, and our mission is to enhance the human-animal bond by providing a second chance to those who have faced neglect, abandonment, or the loss of their home.

Our Sanctuary Environment

Located on 157 scenic acres in central Virginia, our sanctuary offers a spacious and peaceful environment where animals receive personalized diet, medical care, and training. While we are a no-kill facility that provides a lifetime home for animals who need it, our primary goal is to help each dog and cat find their own loving forever home. Whether in our facility or through our foster programs, we ensure every animal receives the individualized care they deserve.

The Perfect Match

We believe there are no wrong animals, only wrong match-ups. Our adoption process is designed to understand your lifestyle so we can suggest the most compatible candidates based on each pet's unique physical and emotional needs. We are here to assist you in creating a lasting, joyful partnership that brings a new, cherished family member into your life.

Join Our Mission

We invite you to meet our wonderful canine and feline friends and discover the joy of adoption. You can explore our available animals online, fill out an adoption application, or learn about our volunteer and foster opportunities to see how you can make a difference. Every one counts, and we look forward to helping you find your next best friend.

10/9 - We have more sad news to share with everyone but as you know, we accept a wide variety of pets to care for, some more healthy than others but ALL desperate to land in a caring spot when others turn them away. Earlier this week, we lost MARBLE and SAI. These delightful kitties called CFC home for about 4 yrs and it was our joy to be their caregivers. Below is a wonderful tribute to both by volunteers Ed and Candy. Safe travels Marble and Sai and thanks for stopping by!! From Ed and Candy: What a major loss for CFC with these two, both were such beautiful souls. It’s so interesting that: Both were double positive. They came to CFC from the same place on the same day. They departed together as well. Sai was very sweet from the beginning, but his infected eye was such a struggle for him. The positive turnaround in him after it was removed was just amazing. We remember his good eye looking so much brighter afterwards and him looking more healthy overall. Had CFC not stepped in and helped Sai his story could have ended a lot sooner. He became so healthy & strong, ruling the roost in the observation room with his gentle, yet strong aura. Take a look at the attached video for an interaction between Sai and Justice about 2.5 years ago that illustrates his stronger side. Justice (a rambunctious youngster) just pushed Sai a little too far that day. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do (the interaction didn’t seem to phase Justice much). Marble started out a little differently. She was friendly, but VERY guarded and REALLY didn’t receive attention from anyone if she perceived it as potentially being a threat. She actually missed her initial spay appointment because she refused to go into a carrier. Fast forward four years to when Ed took her to CVH for a recent vet appointment; she rubbed his fingers through the cage door bars for nearly the entire hour trip to CFC. We also have a video of Marble to share. That girl sure did love her name!!! We hope these pics & videos help you all remember the special ways Sai and Marble touched all of our hearts. Ed & Candy

9/30 - SUPER EXCITING NEWS FOLKS!!! It's big news. Really!! Our blind kitty POPEYE has taken another huge step towards settling in and feeling safe and comfortable. We have his crate on the floor in his room now and we've popped out his space by adding an ex-pen set up so he has much more real estate. He seems fine having the other residents coming up to his wire enclosure and introducing themselves, he's letting some of his known human friends pet him AND ......drum roll......he's even getting in laps now (with the humans he knows). We are so PROUD of our big boy. Seeing him relaxed and no longer afraid - well, we are just elated!!!
