The Animal Protection Unit (APU) is dedicated to protecting both the citizens and animals of New Kent County through education and the enforcement of local and state laws. We strive to create a safe, compassionate community where every animal is treated with care and respect.
Operating under the New Kent Sheriff's Office, our team serves as the primary law enforcement agency for all animal-related calls in the county. We handle a wide range of situations, from domestic pets to agricultural animals and local wildlife, ensuring the well-being of our community’s animals during our daily operations from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Our commitment to animal welfare goes beyond enforcement. We investigate concerns, conduct proactive neighborhood patrols, and provide resources to pet owners, including guidance on local ordinances and information regarding low-cost spay and neuter options to help manage pet populations responsibly.
We believe finding the perfect companion is a joyful experience, and our adoption process is designed to help you find a perfect fit for your lifestyle. Our standard adoption fee for dogs and cats is $20, and we take care to ensure that each placement is set up for long-term success. If you live within New Kent County or one of our bordering counties, we look forward to introducing you to your new family member.
