10/15 - Monday’s @freedomfirstcu_va Volunteer Day was Phineas’ dream come true! Not because of the yummy treats being made or the cozy blankets being put together, but because of all the people there to shower him with love. He enjoyed every second! Now, if we could just find him a home where every day could be this good! Our big, lovable meathead is still looking for a foster or forever home where he can finally enjoy life outside the shelter. We know his perfect family is out there. ❤️

10/14 - This is how adoptable Winnie learned that a man isn’t so scary. ❤️ We started by slowing down and simply existing together. As Winnie’s body language showed she was becoming more comfortable, I gradually offered interaction while giving her the freedom to approach or retreat. Affection was offered for just a few seconds, then paused. If she came back for more, we continued. After about 30 minutes, Winnie was comfortable enough to be herself around me, and I could begin being myself around her. Progress with fearful dogs isn’t about speed. It’s about building trust. Sometimes that takes 30 minutes, sometimes days or longer. Read their body language, respect their boundaries, and give them the choice to engage. Never force an interaction. ❤️ Winnie is currently available for adoption through Angels of Assisi! 10/1 - What it’s like to be loved by adoptable Barney: Absolutely no sense of personal space. Constant sniffing. Hugs. Demands for pets, which you won’t mind because he has the SOFTEST fur. And, if you’re really lucky, a few of his signature corn cob nibbles on the chin. But being loved by Barney also means understanding where he came from. Before arriving at AoA, Barney was living outside in West Virginia and later spent months tied up to a tree. Those experiences have stuck with him in a few ways. He can be hesitant when meeting new people, especially men, and he sometimes guards his food, things that can be worked on with patience and training. At almost 3 years old, Barney has so much love to give once he knows he can trust you. He’s looking for someone who will respect his past, give him the time he needs, and in return, get one incredibly loyal companion who will make sure they never have personal space again. Come meet Barney and see what it’s like to be loved by this good boy. ❤️
