Roanoke Valley SPCA

Our Mission

The Roanoke Valley SPCA is a community resource that provides pet adoption, retention, and education services in Virginia’s Blue Ridge. We strive to create a community where animal welfare is valued and demonstrated, leading to positive outcomes for both animals and people.

Our Commitment to Animals

Since 1916, we have prioritized the welfare of homeless and unwanted animals. We are a private, nonprofit organization funded entirely by our community, and we operate a dedicated Adoption & Education Center to provide a safe, compassionate environment for those awaiting their forever families.

How We Help

We provide food, shelter, rehabilitation, and medical care for homeless animals, ensuring every pet is spayed or neutered, microchipped, and behaviorally evaluated before adoption. To save even more lives, we utilize a robust foster care program for underage, under-socialized, and recovering animals, ensuring each pet receives the individual love and attention they need to thrive.

Your Adoption Journey

We believe that pets and people belong together, and we are here to help you find the perfect match for your home and lifestyle. Our adoption counselors work closely with you to ensure a successful, lasting bond, and we offer extensive post-adoption support, including training resources and veterinary guidance, to help your new companion settle in comfortably.

10/8 - We're looking for a few good fosters! We're calling these four precious puppies the Park Puppies since they are named after national parks: Zion, Rainier, Katmai, and Acadia. They are around 5 months old and they need some time in foster care to build self confidence and social skills, and of course, to play and have lots of puppy fun! Caution: fostering one of these pups will likely cause joy, silliness, and lots of giggles. We'll provide all the supplies. You just bring the love. If you're interested in helping and you're already an approved foster, please email foster@rvspca.org and if you are not yet an approved foster, just fill out the volunteer application on our website. We cannot thank you enough! P.S. fosters get first opportunity to adopt their foster puppy too!

10/2 - We wanted to update everyone about our current status because yesterday was a very long and stressful day! In case you missed it, yesterday morning, authorities notified us that we needed to evacuate the premises and get to a "secure location" outside of the immediate area. It's since been reported that a military ordnance was discovered one street over from our shelter, which is what prompted the evacuation. Luckily, this happened before we were open to the public. Unluckily, this occurred when we had active surgeries happening. So other than ensuring the safety of our volunteers and staff, getting those surgery patients cared for was top priority. Yesterday our extraordinary veterinary team had to very quickly finish surgery and carry the still sedated dogs to our vehicles. Vinton Veterinary Hospital graciously allowed us to bring the dogs to recover in their hospital and even spend the night there. THANK YOU, VINTON VET! If we have time, we can evacuate animals along with our humans by placing the animals in crates in our vans and driving them to safety in a climate controlled environment. However, yesterday's evacuation didn't allow for that. We were made to leave the premises and so quickly before leaving, our incredible animal care team provided additional food and water to every animal since we weren't sure what was happening and how long this would last. Thank you to our animal care staff! We are so happy and fortunate to be back in the shelter today and all the pets are looking great! Carp, in the video here, is also REALLY happy things are back to normal! We're thankful that our community is safe and that this situation was resolved pretty quickly. We are open during normal hours today from Noon - 6:00PM, and also plan to proceed with our dog adoption event tomorrow at Southern Team Subaru so some of these dogs and puppies in our care can find their new homes! Thank you to all of you for your patience as we waited for new information to share, and we're incredibly grateful for your support!

9/25 - The finest feline fellow, Fishington, is this week's #featurefriday star! Don't let Fishington's blank-faced expression fool you! While he might look like he's day-dreaming, he's really just waiting for your attention! This easygoing guy has a surprisingly sweet heart; he loves pets, head scratches, and he rolls right over for some attention (he may even bless you with a little drool when he's feeling extra happy). Fishington has plenty of tomcat charm and a whole lot of love to give. Could he be your new best friend? Call (540) 339-9247 to schedule a meet with Fishington, today!
