The Whidbey Animals’ Improvement Foundation (WAIF) is dedicated to protecting companion animals, providing compassionate care, and positively promoting the human-animal connection. We believe every companion animal deserves a safe, loving home where they are treated with kindness, dignity, and respect.
Founded in 1990, WAIF was established to help the homeless companion animals of Whidbey Island. Since then, we have grown into a vital community hub, serving the homeless pet population and families of the island through our commitment to compassion, responsibility, and collaboration.
WAIF operates with a lifesaving philosophy, providing food, shelter, and veterinary care to displaced pets until they are placed into permanent homes, regardless of time or space constraints. We manage animal adoption facilities in three convenient Whidbey Island locations—Coupeville, Oak Harbor, and Freeland—supported by a dedicated network of staff and volunteers.
We believe that adopting a pet is a beautiful, lifetime commitment, and our goal is to help you find the perfect companion for your lifestyle. Our team works hard to understand the unique personality and needs of each animal, ensuring we create successful, joyful matches between our pets and their new families. By considering the needs of both the animal and your household, we ensure that every adoption is the beginning of a wonderful partnership.
Are you ready to find your new best friend? We invite you to view our adoptable cats and dogs on our website or visit our facilities in Coupeville, Oak Harbor, or Freeland to meet our wonderful animals. Your support—whether through adoption, volunteering, or donations—is the heart and soul of WAIF, helping us continue our mission of hope and healing for Whidbey Island pets.
