Helping Animals Thrive

PAWS (Progressive Animal Welfare Society) is a dedicated community of people helping cats, dogs, and wild animals go home and thrive. We believe in a world where animals are recognized for their intrinsic value and treated with the compassion they deserve.

Our History and Commitment

Since 1967, PAWS has been a steadfast advocate for animals, having united more than 170,000 companion animals with loving families. We address the urgent needs of our community by providing essential care to abandoned, injured, and orphaned animals, ensuring they receive a second chance at a happy life.

How We Care for Animals

We operate through a network of specialized facilities, including the PAWS Companion Animal Shelter in Lynnwood, our satellite adoption center at Cat City in Seattle, and our dedicated Wildlife Center in Snohomish. Our team of staff and volunteers provides professional medical care, behavioral support, and a safe, nurturing environment while animals await their permanent homes.

Your Journey to Adoption

We believe that adoption is a joyful, lifelong partnership, and our expert adoption advisors are here to help you find the perfect companion to suit your lifestyle and personality. Our goal is to ensure every match is thoughtful and successful, helping both the animal and your family settle in comfortably.

10/14 - PAWS now has 13 American black bears in care! 🐻 This exam was for bear number 10, who arrived in early October after he was found alone for three days, surviving on apples from a nearby tree. With no sign of mom and still too young to survive on his own, the bear needed a safe place to continue to grow. 🌲 The bear received a full veterinary exam, including a physical exam, radiographs, and bloodwork, to make sure everything was looking good. Our wildlife team is providing the nutrition, medical care, enrichment, and specialized support he needs to grow strong. We’re looking forward to beginning the process of returning some of our bears to the wild this fall!

10/2 - Four coyotes are back where they belong! 🐺 PAWS Wildlife Rehabilitation Center has cared for hundreds of animals this year, and these four coyotes are just a few of the animals who have made their way through our doors. Coyotes may arrive at PAWS for many reasons. Some come to us as orphaned pups who are too young to survive on their own, while others need help after being injured, such as from a vehicle strike. On release day, the four coyotes were transported to a remote area in Snohomish County, where they have a good chance to thrive out in the wild. Once they arrived, they took a little time to emerge from their carriers. But one by one, they made their way out and began the next chapter of their lives where they belong. 🌲 We’re so glad to see these four coyotes back out there!

9/26 - Earlier this month, we released a cohort of 10 raccoons back to the wild! Most of the raccoons who come to PAWS are orphaned, while others arrive after injuries such as vehicle strikes or impacts of human-related incidents. Throughout their time in rehabilitation, our wildlife staff, volunteers, and interns provide the specialized care they need to grow, recover, and prepare for life on their own, while keeping human interaction to a minimum. While in care, human interaction is always kept to a minimum to keep these animals wild. During rehabilitation, they need opportunities to develop the skills they’ll need to survive on their own, including foraging for and processing food, climbing with strength and coordination, and interacting appropriately with others of their species. Last year, we released 46 raccoons and we are looking forward to releasing the rest of the raccoon cohorts this fall! 🦝🌲
