Adopt-A-Pet

Our Mission

Adopt-A-Pet of Shelton, Washington, is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization dedicated to rescuing unwanted, abandoned, and abused dogs. We work tirelessly to provide these animals with a safe, temporary home and the specialized care they need while preparing them for their forever families.

Our History and Community

Our journey began in 1979 when seven dedicated Mason County residents recognized a local need for a safe haven for dogs. What started with two backyard kennels has grown over 46 years into a vital resource for our community, now featuring a facility that can accommodate 35 dogs. As a 501(c)3 organization, we are proud to support Mason County through adoptions, a low-cost spay/neuter program, and life-saving rescue efforts.

How We Operate

We are a passionate team of volunteers with zero paid staff, relying entirely on the generosity of our supporters and our dedicated foster network. Because we prioritize the well-being and temperament of our animals, our facility is currently open to the public by appointment only. This thoughtful approach ensures each dog receives the individual attention they deserve while waiting for their perfect match.

Finding Your Perfect Companion

We believe that adopting a dog is a life-changing commitment that brings immense joy to both the pet and the household. Our adoption process is designed to help us understand your lifestyle and needs so that we can make the most compatible, long-lasting connections. We strive for accuracy in our records and work closely with every family to ensure everyone is prepared for the responsibilities and rewards of guardianship.

10/18 - Adopt-A-Pet is proud to support Concern for Animals! 🐾 We were honored to present our annual check to Concern for Animals at this year’s Toast for Tails fundraiser! ❤️ We are grateful to be part of such a wonderful community that comes together to support an incredible nonprofit organization. Concern for Animals works tirelessly to help keep pets and their families together during challenging times by providing much-needed assistance when it matters most. At Adopt-A-Pet, we understand how important the bond between people and their pets can be. As a shelter dedicated to caring for homeless dogs and finding them loving homes, we know that supporting animals goes beyond our shelter walls. It also means helping families keep the beloved pets who are already part of their lives. Together, we can make a difference for animals and the people who love them. Thank you, Concern for Animals, for the amazing work you do and for being such an important part of our animal-loving community! 🐶🐱💕 #AdoptAPet #ConcernForAnimals #ToastForTails #CommunitySupport #KeepingFamiliesTogether #AnimalWelfare

10/4 - ❤️ OCTOBER IS PIT BULL AWARENESS MONTH! ❤️🐾 It’s time to look beyond the stereotypes and see the individual dog underneath the label. Pit bull-type dogs are often misunderstood and judged before they ever get the chance to show who they really are. But spend some time with one, and you may discover a goofy, affectionate, loyal, playful companion who simply wants to be loved. 🥰🐶 What is a “Pit Bull”? “Pit bull” is not one specific breed. The term is often used for several breeds and mixes, including American Pit Bull Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers, Staffordshire Bull Terriers, and other similar mixes. Like all dogs, every one is an individual with their own personality, likes, dislikes, and needs. Many pit bull-type dogs are known for being: ❤️ Loving and affectionate 🐾 Loyal companions 🎾 Playful and energetic 🧠 Intelligent and eager to learn 😂 Completely goofy and full of personality Most importantly, a dog should be judged by who they are—not simply by a label. This Pit Bull Awareness Month, we encourage everyone to educate instead of fear, meet instead of assume, and consider adoption. 🏠 There are pit bull-type dogs in shelters and rescues waiting for someone to see their potential and give them a chance. Sometimes the dog you were told to be afraid of becomes the best friend you ever had. 🐶❤️ 🐾 Give a shelter dog a chance. You might just change two lives—theirs and yours. #PitBullAwarenessMonth #PitBullAwareness #AdoptDontShop #ShelterDogs #RescueDogs #AdoptLocal #GiveThemAChance #RescuePitBull #ShelterPets
