The Animal Welfare Society of Jefferson County is dedicated to providing compassionate housing and adoption services for abandoned, surrendered, and neglected dogs and cats. We strive to offer every animal a safe haven until they find their forever home while actively promoting education on responsible pet care throughout our community.
Our journey began on February 7, 1952, when a small group of local residents united to support the stray and unwanted pets of Jefferson County. Over the past 74 years, we have remained true to our founding vision while expanding our services to meet the evolving needs of our community, including pet food assistance and low-cost rabies clinics.
We believe in preparing our animals for a lifetime of love. Every cat and dog in our care is fully vaccinated, microchipped, and spayed or neutered before they are ready for adoption. Our dedicated team and unpaid volunteer Board work tirelessly to ensure our shelter provides a supportive environment for every animal while they wait for their new family.
Adopting a pet is a life-changing experience, and we are here to ensure it is a success for both you and your new companion. We use a personalized questionnaire and interview process to help you find the dog or cat that best fits your lifestyle, ensuring a happy and lasting bond. Every animal has a unique story, and we are honored to help them write their next chapter with you.
Whether you are ready to open your heart to a new companion or want to support our efforts as a volunteer or donor, there are many ways to make a difference. We invite you to visit our shelter in Kearneysville, browse our adoptable pets online, or connect with us to learn more about how you can support our work.
